Suddenly doesn't work. Turn on, it says Garmin, then downloading maps, then shuts down.

you can get the manual at www.garmin.com
you'll also need to get yourself a usb cable... the normal end for the computer and i believe the other end is called a mini b connector.

SOURCE: My Garmin shuts off in the loading maps screen
first I would try to load the current firmware from garmins website. if that doesnt work then try a master reset by holding the bottom right corner of the screen, holding that and turning it on. it will however erase all user data.

Those are severe symptoms.
A Hard Reset is a good idea after a firmware upgrade.
There are three levels of getting your Garmin 255W's attention and
correcting bad habits (ie: not loading maps or locking up).
The
first is 'soft reset'. There is a reset button along the bottom of your
gps. Push and hold it until it restarts. If you cannot locate your
reset button, sliding the power switch to OFF and holding for 8 seconds
should do the same thing.
The second method is a 'hard reset' or 'clear all user data', to restore factory defaults.
The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.
Perform the Hard Reset:
*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit
The third method is a firmware upgrade via Garmin's Webupdater, or the myGarmin site.
Run through these fixes to get your Nuvi running as good as new.
I hope that helps.
