GE Profile Spacemaker XL JMV1460 Turns On by Itself

My GE Profile Spacemaker XL JMV1460 sometimes turns on even though there is no time remaining. I open the door and remove food after it initially stops, but when you close the door it starts running again--but no time remains on the machine, and it will keep running until you open the door again. Twice the microwave even turned on itself: both times I witnessed this were after a sudden jolt--like a neighbor slamming door that shakes the shared wall where the microwaved is located. Aside from a ghost in the machine, what might be the problem? Is it better to fix or get a new one?

Thanks for your advice and quick response. I forgot to mention that my model is mounted; it's the 'over-the-range' style.

Sounds like there is a stray piece of wire or other metal floating around inside the case. Remove the cover and any breakables in the microwave (the power cord is unplugged for this), turn it upside down over a table and shake it, pound the bottom, and shake it some more--likely the offending piece will drop out onto the table. If so, put it back together and whack it to see if that fixed the problem (cord plugged back in). This process can be repeated.

Buy another one...we're having the same problem for over a week now with a Kenmore. I don't believe in "reviews" anymore...ours is only a year old; I guess that's about how long they're good for. Before this we had a Sharp - great: for 2 years!

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

It sounds like the main transformer has failed. It would be cheaper to replace the whole microwave than repair this one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this helps. Good luck.
