How can you tell if a new gearbox is needed other than a Ecu which has been replaced

have the fault codes read first
if the car is moving in limp mode with no obvious noises or problems , replacement of the box is a total last resort
light on the dash and limp mode can be transmission or engine or both but the fault codes will show the problem area
The ECU -- engine control unit or ECM --engine control module gets messages from the transmission control module ---TCM--and that TCM controls solenoids and servos , vss and other items that if faulty will put the car in limp mode
read the fault codes

Engine management light flashing. Mechanic s computer - no fault code detected. Now light off for few days and has come back on. Any ideas

Based on that, anyone who tells you they know what the problem is would just be 100% guessing.

2. The mechanics scan tool may not have picked up a code but that does not mean there is no fault code generated ready to be pulled up with the correct equipment. There are also some manufacturer specific codes for various models that many generic scan tools will not necessarily read.

3. I would take it to a dealer service center and have the fault code or codes pulled up and diagnosed as there will be something if the warning light is back on. Whatever fault codes are being generated, their equipment will pick it up.

My expedition wont drive foward but will drive in reverse what could the problem be

Sounds like you lost a solenoid or two in the transmission. Worse case would be burnt clutches or bands. It needs to be on a scanner to tell for sure. A code reader will only pick up a generic 700 code. Not the codes you need to know. Plus with a scanner you can command solenoids on and off and tell if they are working.

Malfunction indicator light came on, it was fine last night but when i started it this morning the light came on and stayed on while i drove to work, it did not flash, just stayed on constant.

Go to your nearest Auto Zone store and have them put their computer on your vehicle, to see what code comes up (IT FREE). They should let you know what the problem it...if not....let me know what the code is and I will let you know what is wrong..Hope this helps you ??

Fault code

There you have two codes:
1 2 or 12 = Battery recently unpluged
5 5 or 55 = End of Test.

So, you dont have malfunction codes in there, this is good.

More details can find in :
- Read Check Engine Codes
- Reset ECU Procedure

Hope help with this (remember rated this DIY and this post, an comment it).
