Hi there, have you downloaded the latest scanner software from Brother and then do the scan from within the software interface. When you press the scan button, do you get the option to scan to and then the format that you want the document scanned. Here is a link to the scanner software from Brother. What you are proposing cannot be done as a mobile broadband modem is sort of a 'mobile phone' device (e.g. Dual band for CDMA 2000 1X and EVDO Rev.A networks 800/1900MHz) and your printer would at best be WIFI 802.11 compatible (ps. MFC-J410 has no 'W'ifi support).
Brother MFC-J410 is USB connection can only be used to connect to a PC/Laptop or print server/router (which may have WIFI support).
You need to install a PDF writer program first. There arequite a few freeware PDF writer programs on the Internet you can download onesuch as CutePDF. Scan your document the click on File - Print and select the PDF writer as theprinter device. Then name and save the PDF file.

You can configure the "File Type" properties while saving as you will see the explanation in this link.
File Type: This is where you can change the format that the file will be saved in. If you choose PDF(*.pdf) to scan and save the data in pdf format it will be saved as pdf file.
any scanner, indeed any document, picture format can be saved as pdf. i would suggest first scanning the document as text (for example to words, or openoffice or indeed whatever you use as your document management program) and then port it (sort of print operation) to any free available "translator" program which allow you to save file as pdf. alternatively you can scan your document as jpeg and then save it as pdf, but this tend to produce very messy outlook and results are usually horrible.
You will need to open the control center program which is installed when you install the printer on your computer.
Start,
all
programs, Brother, control center. Click on configuration then scan
then file (or which ever you normally scan to). There are two tabs at
the top, change the file type at top of each tab to pdf and press ok.
