If the jack is getting hot, don't plug it in any more. Sounds like you might have a short in the jack or on the motherboard itself.

When you plug it in, does it feel loose? if it does, you might need to have the connector on the laptop changed out. This is usually caused by daily use or an accidental hit to the plug.

What's the make and model of the laptop too.

Let me know:)

SOURCE: Dear Sir, My Dell Inspiron 6400 have problem

Hi your AC adaptor might be the problem. I repaired about 7 adaptor charger and I can you that this is the problem. Lot of time this unit is always be drop and the enternal parts such as transformer wiring solder to a little board are all broken off and no connection to the transformer or to the board. Just buy or order it to dell web site and cost is depending to the model of your laptop. I believe the cost is under $100.00.

My hp laptop powers on with a dark screen and then restarts

Check that your AC adaptor is functioning correctly by substituting it with a known good one. (Flickering of the LED light on the charger indicates that there is a fault with the laptop where power is being "spat back").
Check the output voltage using a multimeter and see if the voltage remains steady at the jack of the charger terminals (inner pin and outer plug)
If the charger is functioning ok, check the tightness of the plug in the DC socket, any looseness, or sparking indicates a DC socket that needs replacing.
If this is ok, the problem will most likely lie in the power capacitors on the motherboard and these will need checked by a qualified technician.

No power. no lights. I have checked the power cord and its like there is no power

Firstly check that there is power to the Ac adaptor, this can be done by seeing if the green power indicator light is on on the adaptor body.

If not, then you have a defective plug, blown 3 amp fuse or the adaptor is fried (not uncommon)
If you have a multimeter, you can set it to 20 volts DC and with the adaptor pligged into the mains, test the DC JACK end! by putting the red probe to the inner part of the jack and the black to the outer part, if no reading, then assume the adaptor is dead.

Best way to check is by testing with an adaptor (universal charger type) to see if that works.

Assuming the adaptor is putting out power, check the output with a multimeter as above and see if the voltage is at the correct level (think its 19 volts on that model). If it is, then move on to the DC jack connection on the netbook

Watch the power indicator on the adaptor, if it is not steady green (ie flashes on and off), ther power is not making a circuit in the alptop and is being "spat back", this can be anything from a blown circuit board in the power circuit, to something as simple as a motherboard main fuse.

If there is a staedy green light but no power at the netbook and the jack connection at the netbook is firm and not sloppy or loose, then you will need to have the netbook dismantled and the fuse checked ( this will also need to happen if the jack connection is loose.

Sometimes, removing the battery, pressing the power button on (with the adapator unplugged) for 30 seconds and repowering with the ac adaptor can reboot the system, but I'd be inclined to suspect the adaptor first

I cannot get my acer aspire 4315 to AC power up. new batteries are ok. i have changed the power jack but no difference. please help

Check the light on the AC adaptor when plugged in to the laptop. If it is flashing, it indicates that the power is being "spat back". That is, not completing the circuit. Means that you have a fault in the charging circuit. I'd check for burning around the contacts where the DC port was soldered onto the board / or if the plug type, check the socket on the mobo is not damaged and is firmly soldered on.

After that, (if not already done) check the output voltage of the adaptor with a multimeter, might be a simple failure of the ac adaptor, even though it looks ok

Our dell inspirion 1525 keeps switching itself off when it is plugged into the mains electric. Also the battery does not hold it's charge. What could be the cause ? Thanks

Hi,
Without looking at it I'd guess at it being the DC power jack (where you plug in the power adaptor). These are prone to wear and tear and are easily damaged. When your laptop is plugged in and is turned on, please 'wiggle' the power jack and see if your machine powers down and/or the charging light comes on. If any of the above happens, then it's your DC jack. These can be replaced.

Toshiba Satellite A105-S4064; can't get battery to charge

If you put strain on the jack (e.g. hang power adaptor from it whilst using or charging) then the socket on the mainboard can get hot due to poor contact and melt.

There is no way to fix this except to completely dismantle the laptop and fit a new socket - most likely a repair centre will charge you for a new mainboard.

Try another adaptor to see if that is the problem (broken wire in cord) - otherwise look closely at the socket in the notebook.

sounds like you have an intermittent problem with your AC adaptor or dc input jack. Does the light on the AC adaptor light up when you plug it in? If it does then your dc input jack may be faulty. If the light on the ac adaptor does not light then replace the ac adaptor. Good Luck!

Battery will not charge

The three likeliest candidates are battery, A/C adaptor and laptop power socket. Battery ? Batteries typically last between 1.5 to 4 years, depending on design and use. They are not safely repairable by users or most computer shops despite what you may read. If you remove the battery from the laptop and can run just off the A/C adaptor then the battery is probably the cause. The next test would be to use the battery in another laptop to see if the same problem occurs there. If it does then the battery is defective and needs to be replaced. If the battery does work then it?s likely the charging circuitry in the laptop itself is defective. A/C adaptor - Even though the green LED on the adaptor is on it can still be the cause of your problem. Inspect the cord, especially the jack that plugs into the laptop. The jack typically takes a lot of abuse and it?s common for the cord to be damaged at the base of the laptop jack itself. Often the damage isn?t visible; however, wiggling the wire at the base of the jack can cause the laptop charging LED to come on and off. The only way to truly test the adaptor is to measure the voltage coming out of the jack under a load. The last part is very important; simply measuring the voltage with a meter does not accurately test the adaptor. An easier alternative if you have the option is plugging a working adaptor into your laptop. Laptop power socket - Most times when the power socket in the laptop goes it?s due to a broken solder joint or a broken socket. Inserting the A/C adaptor jack in the socket and wiggling it back and forth can often cause the charging LED on the laptop to turn on and off. If that happens then the socket or the board it connects to needs to be replaced. That requires a major disassembly and is usually beyond the typical user. No power via batteries

The batteries are put in wrong, or there no good, or the dc jack in the back still has the plug in it for the ac adaptor. You see theres a small switch on the jack inside the unit that switches from the ac adaptor to the batteries, when the jack is iserted. Also if the plug is not pluged into the jack, then there could be a bad jack or a broken solder connection on the jack inside on the printed circiut board. good luck
