My gateway laptop gives me a black screen when I turn it on. I do hear the fan going but nothing appears on the screen. What can I do?

Have you tried holding the power button down until it shuts down completely, then unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, put it all back together then try powering back up?

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. If it has no sounds of say music that you would hear of its system launching then its possible its Back up battery has failed an scrambled the Bios, this is a disc like lithium battery in a holder

Bad battery. If it does this when you are using the adapter then the issue is with the motherboard. or a bad peripheral.

Actually this is a hard drive fault most likely, or a faulty had drive. If you don't have a recovery disk you are going to have to start the machine and try to do a recovery to boot repair. You can usually access this with F10 or F12, not really sure on a gateway.

1. take out the memory
2. turn on again without memory (you should hear long beep sound) and turn it off again
   
3. clean memory using eraser (better if you have spare memory to replace it)
4. now try again
   
5. if not working, checks whether the work properly? and clean the fan from dust. and try to switch it on again.

Try this:

• check to make sure the fan is actually spinning and that there is no debri (dust bunnies) causing it to overheat.
• Make sure there is nothing preventing airflow, you may need to tilt the back up to allow more airflow

Is there any display at all? Do you see a BIOS splash screen? Do you hear a beep shortly after powering on?

--if you have a splash screen, go into BIOS setup by pressing a button (del,F1,F10...whatever) then set it factory defaults and save changes

--also try removing anything that's detachable (USB, cards, dvd-rom, RAM, Battery...) Hold down the power button for 20 secs then plug in only the A/C and see if you get a bios screen

replace screen seems like lcd screen is dead... usually runs about 250 on ebay!!!

sounds like ,audio card went died or mite be screen has shorted out try hooking it up an orther screen and see if it boots up if so either viedo screen card or screen it self
