depends on what machine it is your trying to fit the rope to!! some you have to take off the spring tension and remove the pulley in order to feed the rope into and put knot on bottom of pulley, however most briggs and stratton and honda recoil starters you can pull the rope completely out and remove rope then fit new rpe and let spring pull it back in

Remove the fuel tank and starter cowl, remove snapped rope.wind the pulley to put tension on the spring approx 7-8 rotations. Put a screwdriver through gaps in pulley and through a gap in top of cowl in order to stop pulley from releasing tension. Burn end of new rope and twist end with a rag while still hot to make a point at end ( careful not to burn yourself) then feed the pointed end through rope hole on outside of cowl and through the hole in side of plastic pulley. Tie a knot in the rope once its through and on inner of pulley. Fit starter handle to other end of rope.hold rope and remove screwdriver and slowly feed rope back into starter

recoil spring has slipped out of the hole.pull your starter rope out of the wind up mechanism, insert the spring latch on both ends and put back into housing. with a piece of 3/4 square stock or something the will fit mthe hole start to wind the mechanism spring up tight. with apair vishgrips lock it down so it does not move. insert your starter rope anr release the visegrips. the springwii recoil and pull the rope in.cut off excess rope. good luck

remove top starter assy. cut grip from old rope ease rope into spool,
when slack remove center screw and carefully pull out spool, tie knot in rope and thread into spool, wind rope [make sure correct size rope]
around spool until full,carefully turn spool into spring 1 turn then replace screw. put rope into notch on spool and wind up 3-6 turns,

Remove the cover from the side of the blower that contains the pull start. This usually involves removing the self-tapping screws that join the two halves of the blower housing together.

Remove the broken rope from the starter pulley. Usually the rope is attached to the pulley with a simple overhand knot; just grab the knot and pull the rope back through the hole in the pulley. Sometimes the rope is attached to the pulley with a staple or some other fastener, which you'll have to remove first.

3 Remove the handle from the replacement rope, if it's already attached.

4 Thread the end of the rope opposite the handle through the hole in the starter pulley, working from the inside of the pulley (the side facing in toward the engine).

5 Fasten the rope to the pulley. If it attaches with a knot, simply tie an overhand knot, pull it tight and trim off any excess rope sticking out of the knot. If it attaches with a fastener, replace the fastener.

6 Wrap the rope counterclockwise around the pulley until the pulley is full; this usually involves one or two wraps.

7 Thread the free end of the rope through the hole in the blower housing.

8 Replace the blower housing and screw it in place.

9 Trim off excess rope, leaving about 6 inches of rope protruding from the blower housing.

10 Attach the handle to the starter rope. This typically involves threading the rope through one or two holes in the handle and securing with an overhand knot.

The starter rope on my Masport push mower broke. How do I replace the rope and/or starter?

What I do is the following:

Remove the old rope ( what is left of it)

Wind the starter rope pulley about 8 or 9 complete revolutions after I am confident that the spring has engaged the starter pulley

Hold the pulley in place ( align the rope hole in the pulley with hole in the starter housing

Insert the rope and tie a knot, pull the rope back tight against the pulley

Pull the rope all the way out and hold slight tension on the rope and release the tension on the pulley but still holding the starter housing

Starter spring should pull rope into housing... good luck

You must first remove the cover assembly which houses the starter pulley. Pull the old rope completely out until it no longer moves. Hold the starter pulley and remove the old rope. Try to wind the starter pulley spring tighter if possible. DON'T LET GO. The starter rewind spring must be wound before installing the new rope. After winding the spring, thread the new rope through the cover and into the hole in the pulley. Tie a good knot in the end and let the rope wind slowly into the housing. Once you have this done, replace the cover, get the proper length of rope, thread it through the handle, tie a knot in this end and your ready to go.
