How to fix 1 inch holes in drywall

Drilled a big hole expecting to use drywall anchors provided with the assembly. turns out the drywall is too thick to allow the anchors to open. I ended up just using the screws on smaller holes but now i have to fix these holes up. any ideas without needed heavy drywall repair materials?

  • Jeff Veldman Sep 28, 2017

Just need to put drywall compound into the hole ,let it dry and maybe another once over depending where the hole is

  • Ron Morton Dec 17, 2017

Right Jeff, clean the hole of dust and loose surface paper. I mix and apply setting compound to the edges of the hole by smearing it with me finger to make sure it adheres well then fill the rest with this same type compound. This is a powder that is mixed with water. Let it set up then you can add another layer of drywall compound or you can tape over the hole with about a 4" piece of paper tape making sure it is flat to the wall. Feather out the area, sand and paint. If someone has this repair from a door knob they'll need to strengthen the area first or it will break again.

Wow all those answers are ok but easy way is to wad up a piece of paper larger than the hole-force piece of that paper into hole slowly not to force into cavity behind just slightly flush then stop-take a putty knife and float with drywall compound you can get a small container of that compound at walmart even-then repeat and sand between coats until you are flush and smooth-if there is a texture then on last coat take a roller and run it thru the wet compound

SOURCE: drilling a composit sink for a 4 hole faucet

If is real granite you will need diamond tipped coring bits, if it is a composite then quality hole saws and/or drills will work. Slow and cold is the rule here, do not force the tool and you should be fine.

Dear Sir How to fasten grab bar LR8918P ( page 66 )to the wall. I plan on buying one and attaching it with screws through 1/2 inch drywall and wood studding. Thank you, George

Use a hollow wall anchor similar to this design (This design is my preferred drywall/plasterboard anchor and I use them all the time) -
Hollow Wall Anchor M6 6mm Grip Range 3mm 16mm Cavity Fixings Zinc Yellow...
If you hit a timber stud inside the wall while drilling the guide hole, simply use an appropriate timber screw to anchor the grab rail mount to. These metal anchors are easy to use and very robust.
Avoid using plastic self drilling anchors. They are low load bearing, sometimes fail when being drilled into the wall leaving a hole and forcing you to relocate your fixture and are difficult to extract the anchor screw from once you've completed mounting your hardware. I'll add a video tutorial on how to use this design of wall anchor -

How do I hang an object using drywall anchors?

hi there.
Sink A Self-Drilling (Threaded) Anchor
  1. Mark your hanging point with a pencil.
  2. Tap the pointed tip of the anchor into the wall with a hammer.
  3. Once the tip is in the drywall, with a screwdriver, screw the anchor in until it's flush to the wall.

How do you fix a Moen Towel Bar when the mounting system has come apart from the wall?

There are larger screw-type anchors available at a hardware store. If the hole is a half inch, you can possibly use an expanding wing type "molly" anchor. it's hard to assemble the screws through the bracket, then put on the butterfly, and shove the folded butterfly into the hole, but it's doable.

I like the plastic zip-it anchor because it is pretty strong for towel rack or shelf with a few books etc, It simply drills flush into the wall and then you can use a regular pan-head or drywall screw to connect shelf to zip it. Later the zip it can unscrew and hole is filled easily.

Wall dog is nice for 1 step into drywall. Lightweight shelf, with 2 small books and vase..

Toggle bolt for heavy shelves, But requires good sized 1/2" hole drilled first, and takes a few skill techniques.

How are you supposed to use the plastic piece (for walls with no studs) if you want to screw the nail into a wall that has no studs?

hope you dont plan on hanging anything heavy on this. get a drill bit and drill a hole smaller than the anchor you are using, tap the anchor into the sheetrock until its flush, drill the hole at least an 1/8 inch smaller than the anchor so it will be tight enough to keep the anchor from spinning when you insert the screw

Moen 3836...lost installation manual...what size drill bit for the hand held brkt.

There is no single answer that I can give you because it will vary due to material you are mounting to. If you are going to be mounting on ceramic tile or fiberglass shower wall I would recommend you use the plastic anchors that come with the bracket and mounting screws. Use drill size 3/16 drill holes and insert anchors. Mount bracket and screw in place. If you have hollow wall with nothing but sheetrock to hold the bracket I would get small butterfly anchors from hardware store and drill hole slightly larger than the wings on fastener when they are folded back along side the screws. If you have a wood backer board behind shower wall then drill holes with 1/8 inch bit and use screws long enough to reach through shower wall and sheet rock and mount bracket. Hope this helps you. Thanks P.S. If you have to drill thru ceramic tile you will need a carbide tipped bit.

Hole in drywall. need a cheap fix

How big is the hole? A cheap fix is this stuff called fluff, it is lightweight spackling compound, comes in a little tub, will dry hard as a rock, and stay put. You will need a knife big enough for the job, not a little putty knife but a 6 inch dry wall, depending on the size of the hole. A little mesh tape might help a big hole. Hope this helps.

The studs in my wall are 20 inches apart and the wall mount requires them to be 16 inches apart. what do I do?

If I were in that situation I would fabricate a way to mount it using L brackets.
Using at least 2 and up to 4 L brackets of 2" in length I would drill one hole into the stud and the other end can be put in with a drywall anchor or other bolt-anchor type for your wall material.
I believe there are also wall mount types requiring use of only one stud...but don't quote me on it.

Installation

If you are going into drywall then a threaded drywall anchor like this
self%2520drilling%2520zinc%2520cr.jpg
Will be best.

Yopu can buy them at any hardware store. They screw right into the drywall and then another typical screw goes through the mounting plate into this anchor.

I recoment getting metal anchors as the plastic ones break easily.

These hold MUCH better than the push in plastic anchors.

How to Install Towel Ring

Place the mounting bracket against the wall and trace around the inside of the two ovals on the bracket. Gently drill a hole into the center of the traced oval. If you hit a stud, you will not need the anchor. Carefully tap the drywall anchors into the holes. Screw the bracket onto the wall, using the screws provided, into the two anchor points. Make sure the set screw is backed out far enough to set the escutcheon over the mounting bracket. Place the escutcheon over the mounting bracket, top first. Tighten the set screw with the Allen Wrench provided.
