I have a Set 3B and only have experience with that model. Check that you have the instrument leveled with the bubble just above the display. If very far out of level, the self-leveling feature does not work and the instrument displays an error.
Also, confirm that you have indexed the vertical and horizontal encoders by spinning the scope vertically at least one full turn and horizontally at least one full turn. These are required on startup. I typically spin two turns and hear a "beep" when the index point is passed.
Another poster on Fixya says E190 means a problem with the horizontal encoder and suggests seeing a Sokkia service center.

This error E190 appears when there is excessive moisture. Open all the ports, battery compartments, etc., and dry the instrument well. After drying the error disappeared.
If your LCD screen works normally as a viewfinder and lets you review photos then your shutter is likely stuck in the closed position. If the display is black in all modes your LCD display is bad. Unfortunately, there is no safe DIY fix for either problem. The camera will require professional repair.
hi there the fault e90 is a common problem it means the main pcb and the display pcb are having problems communacating to repair this fault both pcb's have to be replaced and then the new one needs to be configured to your model of machine.
if i was you i would keep using the machine as long as you can put up with it, as this is a costly repair about £170
