Sounds like from the symptoms that you have plugged the white and red cables into AV3 input on the back of the Teleivsion and plugged the yellow cable into AV1 on the back of the Television.
Check the cables are all plugged into AV1 input ports on the back of the Television. Red and White go into the Audio inputs and Yellow goes in the video input. Also make sure you have not plugged cables into component inputs on television look for AV1 in on back of Television .

If your TV has the green, blue, red inputs then connect these 3 cables for the picture. DVD to TV, green to green, blue to blue and red to red. If your TV only has a yellow input, then connect the green cable only from the DVD yellow to the TV yellow. Now for the sound. Connect the DVD white to the TV white. Connect the DVD red to the TV red with the red cable. The white and red inputs will be next to the yellow and the green, blue, red inputs on the TV. Next select the TV input using your TV remote. Your problem is that your TV has no video inputs. TVs use those red white and yellow plugs to transmit the signal via those cables. By cable box - do you mean a digital box? You can't run it through that unforunately - those connections are only for the box itself and it only has an output.
You'll have to go either: Buy a new TV or get an RCA Modulator.
