Gene, try removing gas cap, just to see if it runs OK, if it does then the cap vent is plugged not allowing fuel to flow properly. If this does not do it, check fuel filter if applicable or remove carb and clean all ports and jets inside or rebuild carb.

You have a feeling issue..
By choking the engine, you restrict the airflow, thus reduce the amount of fuel being drawn through the carb, meaning it's burning a sufficient amount of fuel and air.
When the choke is off, it's getting too much air for what can be drawn through the carb, meaning you have a furlong issue.
