Many machines allow network printing but not network scanning. I think you will find that the MX850 driver and MP Navigator software simply does not support network scanning. I suggest you query Canon directly.
That model should come with standard network connectivity. If, in fact, the usb port is out then you can connect the unit via ethernet on your LAN and regain your print and scan functions. Keep in mind that network scanning protocols (SMB, FTP, SMTP) require some IT knowledge to set up.
How is your printer connected to your computer, wireless or hardwired with a USB cable? If wireless, check the status of the WiFi light on the printer (green = connected to a network, orange = not connected to a network). Try to turn off/on your printer.
