I have a mild grinding/screeching noise coming from my steering wheel when I turn significantly

Sounds like it could be dry?

Check fluid level of power steering.
Check power steering drive belt for tension and condition.

Testimonial: "thanks Ted. The noise seems to be coming from the actual steering wheel. Would fluid affect it? Is the power steering belt in the actual steering wheel?"

  • Ted Maxwell Mar 28, 2016

The sound will probably be originating at the points I mentioned. When the steering wheel is turned as far as it will go, there will be more resistance on the pump because it thinks it should go further. That puts more load on the drive belt and it doesn't like it so it slips on a drive pulley and complains by making a whining noise.
The steering column between the power steering end and the steering wheel in your hands is like an exaggerated stethescope and the sound gets transmitted through to where you are hearing it.
If you turn the wheel until you start to hear the sound, and then relax on the turning pressure and the sound stops, you should have isolated the problem.

Squeaking/grinding noise when turning the wheel

Are the front brake pads ok? Some have squeal indicators, it is a tin plate that touches the disc (without damaging) to warn you that the brakes are worn. On the initial stages it will happen more so on slow cornering but will quickly get louder over a matter of days.
Check the pads for thickness, should be min 6mm

05 wrangler grinding/screeching

it could be your brakes , on most brakes there is a wear tab that makes a high pitched squeeling noise when it contacts the rotor. this is in place to let you know your brakes are due for replacement. if it is not your brakes then it could be a wheel bearing.
