You may be better off going to google and search "riccar 2910 manual" That way you can follow their detail dorections rather then someone elses and it confuse you. Usually the PDF versions have pictures with it :-)
Glancing through the manuals at Riccar's website I do not find a model 440, though there are models 404, 410 and 414. One of those manuals is likely close enough. While it could be a tension problem, breaking thread is usually a result of a damaged or incorrectly placed needle. Also, if you are using old thread, it may no longer have the strength necessary. The first thing to do is replace the needle with a fresh one, making sure that the flat side is to the rear of the machine, and that the needle is fully inserted. It's also a good idea to remove the feed dog cover plate and remove any buildup of lint. Also remove any lint that may be in the area around the bobbin case and hook.
