Hi Ken
A little wiring 101 is in order here I think.
NMEA out (+ and -) from your GPS goes to NMEA in (+ and -) of your VHF.

Hope this helps you out

Plugged humminbird ns25 gps antennae to my 898cxi humminbird but no gps signal

The NS25 uses a much different god receiver than what is available now and will not work with your 898. What you will require is a AS GRP receiver. https://www.humminbird.com/Products/AS-GRP/

If you have put power to the gps antenna then there is going to be a problem with your gps antenna. The Humminbird gps antenna gets it power from the unit. If you have done this you will need to contact our customer service group to get it resolved. There number is 800-633-1468.

My 161 gps hummingbird isnt picking up gps. do i need to buy an antena or something?

It should work right out of the box. It may have trouble picking up satellites, especially if you are testing it inside your house. A lower-end unit like this isn't going to have as powerful an antenna as more expensive models, so be sure you are outside, with a clear path to outer space and it should work!

Hope this helps.

I understand that matrix 12 is GPS ready ,how do i connect GPS to unit

The GPS system is already in the sounder, you need the G.P.S aerial which is purchased separately. I have this model with the aerial connected and it works well

I can receive only the strongest signals eg from USCG or very local transmissions. Antenna cable connections checked out. Nobody can receive my test transmissions. Do I need a bench test of my set?

Try a new antenna first. If you have the same results and the PL259 connector is the solder type and it is soldered properly then I would take the radio to a test shop for them to test.
