Cat 5 is a cable configuration standard that uses a plug and jack that is similar to a modular phone jack called rj45. Those cables plug into multiple points on the router. If you have a separate cable modem, the cat 5 cable from the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.

Can I set this up this wireless router if I have cable internet and not DSL?

You CAN do this if you have access to the firmware of the ADSL gateway.

Connect cat5 cable from ethernet port on cable modem to ethernet port 1 on ADSL Gateway. (Must be port 1)
-Connect cat5 cable from computer NIC to other port on ADSL Gateway.
-(You may need to) Start->Run->cmd
ipconfig -release all
ipconfig -renew
Here's the trick...
-Open web browser, go to ADSL Gateway homepage (likely 192.168.0.1)
-Configuration tab, Advanced WAN->WAN
-Change WAN PORT drop down from DSL ATM PORT to ETHERNET PORT 1
-Click Edit button. Change Protocol from PPPoE to ROUTED.
-Radio button for DHCP Client to Enable.
-Click Set button.
-(You may need to) Power cycle both Cable Modem and ADSL Gateway device

Now this was done on a Westell ADSL gateway from verizon, yours may differ and you may need to look up the instructions for your specific gateway.

Setup belkin wireless network

Hi,
1.Connect a Cat5 cable into the Ethernet port on the back of your cable or DSL modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the "Connect to Modem Internet/WAN" port on the back of the Belkin Router.
2.Connect a Cat5 cable into the "Ethernet" port on the back of any desktop or stationary computers and then plug the other end of the cable into one of the LAN ports on the back of the Belkin Router. Start with port one and work your way up with subsequent computer connections.
3.Turn the Belkin Router on by plugging the router into a power outlet. Allow 30 seconds for the router to fully boot up. All computers tethered to the modem via a Cat5 cable have access to the Internet.
4.Open the Wi-Fi Wizard on your laptop and turn on the Wi-Fi antenna. Once turned on, the Wizard finds all network connections in your area. Connect to your network to establish an Internet connection. Complete this step for each computer not tethered to the Belkin Router with a Cat5 cable.

Trying to hook up router. What is the wan for and the 4 inputs

The WAN port is the physical interface that provides input and output to and from the device that provides Wide Area Networking capability .. i.e. the modem that connects to your Internet Service Provider. The usual choices are a DSL modem, a cable modem or a Wired router or a wired switch.
The 4 other inputs are wired inputs and outputs for wired Local Area Network connections.
The WAN port normally connects to the Internet. It is not necessary to connect anything to the WAN port to have a network. But without one of the usual devices, you will not have access to the Internet.
The LAN ports connect to the network interface port on the individual computers that are part of the local network. One port connects to one computer.
A large system will have routers connected through the LAN ports to the WAN ports on sub routers and so forth.

How do i hook up a router

Let's proceed first with the physical connectivity. Please follow the steps below:

1. Make sure that your computer is working when directly connected to the modem.

2. Connect the CAT5 cable of your modem to the WAN port of your GWA504.

3. You should have another CAT5 cable. That CAT5 cable will be connected to any one of the LAN ports on the back of that router.

4. Connect the other end of the CAT5 cable to the network card of your computer.

5. After the physical connection, just let me know and we will proceed with the next steps. Because your statement is very broad. We have to consider lots of things here. Please reply so that I could further assist you.
