Make sure you hold in the thermostat knob for several seconds. Once the thermocouple is hot it should stay lit if the flame is close enough to the burner.
Sounds like you need a new thermocoupler unit... Given that electricians/plumbers charge $100/hr or more, and the parts will likely cost $50+, consider taking it to the dump instead.
I had the same problem and I found that if I tightened the thermocouple line on the back of the smoker control knob it would work properly. You can see the thermocouple line brass nut thru the slotted opening just above the double doors and below the control knobs. Mine was only finger tight and as soon as I tightened the thermocouple line nut, everything worked normal. Good Luck
Normally the grill is completely separate to the oven. Press the ignitor before you turn on the grill, as, to ignite, oxygen needs to be present (ie: not flooded with gas) . and you should be able to see the spark from the ignitor in the grill. if you can't, then you may have problems with your ignition pack or ignition leads.
I hope & pray, that the grill tank is not indoors with the heater. In any event, if you're using a grill regulator too, it's not going to provide the 11 to 13 water column inches of pressure that is required for 40,000 BTU's. That's why the heater wont stay lit. Nor, is it going to burn very long, as that grill tank only holds 2 gallons of gas
This is a gas appliance that is safe when installed and operated properly. Don't try to jury rig something that could come back to bite you in the end. Injuring or killing you and your family.
These new tanks have a safety device installed in them . If you open the valve quickly or tip the jug the damn thang won't work. Take the tank loose, open all the grill valves and close all valves. Reconnect the tank and SLOWLY open the valve a hair. Light the burners. No need to open the valve all the way. if you do the dumb safety will plug the jug.
