It's possible you installed the valve upside down, all values should be labeled in some way marking either hot and cold or it will say the word up where the riser tube port for the shower head is. If that's not the case remove the tub spout and check for any obstruction sometimes during tile or constructing debris can get into the pipe for your tub spout. Lastly the diverter on the tub spout could be bad. Try a new tub spout

How come the water only comes out of the shower head but does not come out of the part that fills up the tub then whenever I pull the switch in the tubs facet?

I think that the switch that lets you change the water to come out of the shower head and the bathtubs water spout is broken and needs to be replaced. Or it could be stuck then and needs to be unstuck.Have a plumber take a look at the water taps switch part then to see if it needs replacement or needs to be unstuck.

Should I replace my only bathtub with a shower?

that is up to you
but consider this
Age or physical problems makes baths difficult and dangerous
so a shower stall with a seat is a better properisition
next showering last for around 7 minutes and that amount of water is less than 1/2 tub unless you stand under the shower until the hot water runs out
lastly , I have never considered it hygienic to wash you face in the same water that you wash your rear in

50 year old ranch home. Bathtub has hot and cold faucets and lift diverter for shower. Shower has rarely been used in this room, but recently guest tried using the shower, causing a literal...

when the water diverter is used it leaks, the problem is the pipe that runs up to the shower head is either rusted trough , not connected or not even there. You will need to cut an access panel in the back of the wall and inspect the plumbing, unless there is one already there. I am guessing that even if you replace everything it should not be more the $100. The cheapest place to purchase your items would be on eBay, of course if you can't wait Wal-Mart carriers what you need. Good Luck Tim

No running water from my shower

Check water lines to shower and make sure that there is no blockage or water cut off to it. Valve itself could be bad also or blockage inside it.

I f it is a tub & shower unit the diverter may be bad or stuck in place restricting water flow. Some are push button on the valve or a pull unit on tub spout to send water to shower head.
Cut water off and remove to inspect for reason not functioning correctly.
Remove shower head to inspect for blockage. The srceen may be stopped up for the shower head. Remove turn water on and see if any flow comes out shower arm.

Leaking shower head

Not unless you had a backward plumber , If the diverter at the faucet is open for tub, then no water will go up the shower, The shower may hold enough water up there to make it look like a drip, Even if the valve was leaking all the time, it would not go up, it would come out the faucet. It only works with pressure. Unless the valve was plumbed wrong,,, Hope this helps.
