I was able to replace the original NiCad AA batteries with a NMiH 2.4V 1500mAH (3.6 Wh) cordless phone battery Uniden BT-1015. Take out the three screws holding the back on. loosen the battery clamp, slide out the old battery and unplug it, cut off the plug on the new battery, strip each wire about 1/4 inch, push the new wires into the old wire plugs maintaining color, black to black, red to red, fasten new battery under battery clamp, adjust new battery so back of case goes on, fasten back on with original screws, charge new battery with original battery charger over night. I got my new Jensen brand battery at Meijers.

Something is draining the battery most likly a short somewhere in the electrical system. You will need to have it looked at by the garage to find the short A temporary or cheaper solution may be to disconnect the battery when not using the car. You can either fit a switch inside the car or physically disconnect it at the battery.
The new battery is defective then. If the new battery was working then the meter would be able to read into the battery and recognize how much power is left in it. the problem more then likely is that one of the cells in the new battery is bad and since the laptop can't see all off the cells then it thinks the new battery doesn't exist.
