Hi,

the gear shift shaft/rod pushes down on a metal wedge inside the gear box this forces a dog clutch to engage a gear and transfer the engine drive to the prop shaft along the prop. A return spring keeps the dog clutch against the wedge so that when the shift shaft/rod is lifted the dog clutch disengages (neutral) if you keep lifting another gear is engaged, astern. Missing one of the gears, adjustment. No gears, shaft/rod alignment. Is yours direct mechanically hard linked or does a cable transfer the movement to the shaft? Check the top shift connections first, before taking the leg apart again.
Hope the above, windy reply is useful.

Boat impeller

Undo gearbox bolts, take off trim tab, undo bolt in trim tab cavity, disconnect speedo tube, pull off gearbox. You will see pump housing, undo 4 bolts, pull off housing exposing impeller, there maybe a clip on top of impeller depending on model, pull off clip then impeller.yamaha didn't make outboards in 75

I have a boat motor that will hit high rpm's in neutral , but when you put it in gear the boat will only reach about 5 miles an hour

Sounds like low compression. You can check with gauge at plug holes. If you dont have one , you can get a loaner at auto parts store.

I need to install a water pump impeller I just bought this boat I think the impeller is dry rotted I found a new one in the boat and also how to install the gear oil in the lower unit and what wieght oil I...

Usually you just buy outboard motor gear oil and that does it. (about 70 to 90) I think. Usualy comes in a squeezy tube for injecting it under pressure.
It needs to be injected from the bottom drain hole and you force it in till it starts to come out of the top drain hole.
Most outboards work like that so I assume yours probably will.

With boat on trailer put drive in gear, engine off, remove bellow cover on the lower unit and check u-joint for any slack or noise when you try to rotate prop.Does clacking happen more when you raise lower unit?

Need oil change in water

If its a 2 stroke, there is no oil to change, if its a 4 stroke, you can pump the oil out with a small diameter tube pump.Depending on the motor, you can get it through the dipstick or the fill opening. If you need to change the gear oil, there is no way to change it while in the water. Stop by a marine supply store and get some oil absorbsion pads (diapers) in case you happen to spill any oil into the water
