You may have hair and debris in the endcaps or bearings of your brushroll causing a restriction. The belt sensor thinks you have something stuck in the brushroll so it shuts it off. It's a simple fix, if you can't figure out how to do it take it to your Riccar dealer.

Our handheld Riccar Gem R-4 stopped working. I looked and the bag was super clogged... oops. I cleaned it up but the machine won't turn on. Is there a fuse or breaker or ... is the motor shot?

Riccar uses an external thermal reset which is more reliable than most brands which use a thermal reset built into the motor. On your Riccar it will be on the back on the bottom left. It is a little tiny button that you will hear "click" when you push on it if it has been popped. If not it will not push in and you won't hear the click. The older models did not all have a reset button. If you have to keep pushing the reset it means that most likely you have a clog somewhere or the bag is full. It's rare but occasionally a thermal reset button may go bad and need replaced.

I have a Riccar Brilliance. When I turn the vacuum on, the bag pushes so hard from the inside it starts to push through the left side...

I can’t really help with the bag issue because I’ve never heard of that before. But my guess is that the bag isn’t breathing properly or is overly full. If the vacuum sounds louder it’s possibly because the fan is off balance and/or the brush could be bad. To test this turn both switches on and listen is the vacuum sounds normal then we know it’s not the bypass motor. If however you put the handle back and the vacuum is loud it’s probably the fan in the direct air motor. You can also take the brush out and do the same test to see if the loud noise is coming from the brush. If you take the brush out and run both motors and they sound fine, you know the problem is in the brush. Hopefully that helps.

Why wont the reset button depress on riccar 8955 or turn on after trying

The reset button does not have a significant amount of movement in response to pressing to with a paper clip or ball point pen. If the vacuum does not start upon pressing the button, then either the thermal protection circuit is not why the vacuum stopped in the first place or the reason the thermal protection circuit tripped has not been cleared. Quoting from the manual

"Your Riccar vacuum cleaner comes equipped with a Manual Reset Thermal Fuse Protector. This thermal protector is designed to protect your vacuum cleaner from overheating due to a restriction in airflow (i.e. clogged hose, operating the vacuum without a bag). Should this situation occur, the thermal fuse protector will safely shut off the vacuum cleaner to avoid any potential damage. NOTE: To determine it was the thermal fuse protector that turned off your vacuum
cleaner, please refer to the vacuum cleaner's headlight. If the headlight is on while the motor is off, then the thermal fuse protector did safely shut down the motor. If both the headlight and motor are off, then there is some reason other than the thermal protector (i.e. pulled plug) your vacuum is off.
To reset the thermal fuse:
. Unplug the vacuum cleaner

  1. Check for problem - over-filled bag, clog in hose, clogged filters, etc.
  2. Correct problem
  3. Locate "tripped" fuse - the small white button located on the bottom of the back side of the main body (roughly one inch to the right of the left wheel)
  4. Using a pencil, paper clip or other pointed object, push the reset button in
  5. Plug vacuum cleaner in and resume use"

Replace belt on Riccar Brilliance

The Brilliance has a lifetime belt but if it gets overheated it can get warped and comes off. Normally you do not need to replace the belt unless there is a problem. You have to remove the cover over the power nozzle assembly by removing the screws on the bottom. Notice how the belt goes around the motor shaft and through the "Hall Assembly" which is the spring loaded lever that detects a jam and shuts the brush roll motor off.

Stopped running. Filter was clogged. Cleaned filter and changed bag, but still won't start. Motor was warm when it stopped.

Hi There,

This sounds like the Thermal Switch in your motor tripped. All Riccar vacuum cleaners have a motor reset switch, that will shut the motor down when it gets hot. Usually it's caused by a full bag, clog, or dirty filter.

Try resetting the thermal switch first. If this doesn't work, you may have done some more serious damage to the motor, and it might be a good idea to take it into a local Riccar dealer in your area.

Here's a step by step guide on how to check the reset switch on your Riccar 8850:

To reset the thermal fuse:
  1. Unplug the vacuum cleaner
  2. Check for problem – over–filled bag, clog in hose, clogged filters, etc.
Remove the vacuum bag, and see if you can visibly see any obstructions, or replace the bag if it's full:

Also inspect the Secondary filter while you have the vacuum bag removed from the machine. If the filter is clogged or dirty, rinse under warm water, and air dry completely before reinstalling it into the vacuum. It's best to wash this filter every 30 days, and replace after 4-5 washings.

Here's a link to the secondary filter on our website if you ever need to purchase one:

Your Riccar 8850 also has a set of exhaust filters that are on the front of the vacuum, near the bottom where the upright body meets the agitator housing. These filters when clogged may also cause the thermal switch to trip. These filters are recommended to be replaced every 6-12 months, and are not recommended to be washed.

Here's a link to 2 sets of the exhaust filters for the Riccar 8850 on our website:

It's also possible that you may have clog in the suction port inside of the agitator housing. Remove the bottom plate from the vacuum, and look for the tube that runs on the left hand side from the tray to the rear of the agitator housing. Make sure that this tube is clear from obstructions:

Locate "tripped" fuse – the small white button located on the bottom of the back side of
the main body (roughly one inch to the right of the left wheel)

Using a pencil, paper clip or other pointed object, push the reset button in, you should hear a clicking noise when it resets.

Plug the vacuum cleaner back into the wall, and try turning the vacuum on. It should come right back on. If not, it's best to take your machine into a local Riccar authorized repair facility for further more advanced diagnosing.

Please feel free to ask any follow up questions by adding a comment to this repair, I'm always more then happy to answer any and all follow up questions if you need some clarification. If this was helpful, please rate the repair helpful or leave some feedback for me. Thanks so much,

Riccar 1500p vacuum won't start

it has a thermal fuse that shuts it down if it over heats. Check the hose , wands and floor tool for blockage and check your bag and filters as well.
