You need to disable the proximity sensor. The use of the proximity sensor is to detect if the phone is up to your ear during a call, to turn the screen off. However if there is debris on the sensor or even a screen protector over it, it constantly thinks it is up to your ear, hence blacking out the second you make a phone call.

You can go into settings and call settings to disable the proximity sensor.

Screen goes black after making call which means I can't punch in extension

Sounds like the proximity sensor. The phone has a sensor that attempts to determine if the phone is up to your ear, and then shuts the screen when it is to save battery. However, if you have a screen protector of any sort it can block the sensor, making the phone think it is up to your ear once you place the call.

Easiest way to test this is to disable the proximity sensor then place a call. If the screen does not instantly go black after you place the call, then you know for sure something is blocking it. If you have a screen protector, try removing that.

To disable the sensor:
  1. Goto settings
  2. Call settings
  3. Additional settings
  4. Uncheck the proximity sensor box

Cellphone - black screen

There is a LCD strip (Bunch of closely punched wires, that makes up a connector). If you have replaced the LCD yourself them there may be chances that the strip is not properly punched. That strip comes out of display and goes straight onto the main circuit board.
This is a common issue that makes the Phone works perfectly but in a black-out mode.
I hope you have a clear picture now.

Screen goes black when I press "finished", for next input.

Gentlemen, I have not received a reply to date from your outlet. I do not wish to join anything. I just want to know if my unit requires professional repair and who do I go to to have it repaired.
Thank you,

Cannot change name ID for each extension, shows old names

Read several on-line manuals and found out another way to access programming trees. It was a confusing mess and was mostly trial and error. The 4 keys under the read out screen are a key factor and knowing how those buttons interact with each other is important. In the process I screwed up regular functions because the password that allows set-up using the feature codes cannot be changed. Not a user friendly set-up at all and the initial manual virtually useless for some needs.

Screen flickers

It is either the inverter board or the backlight. There are no fixes, only replacement.

File numbers not displayed on screen

This may be a very simple problem.

Set the function dial to playback (the box with an arrow inside).

Adjacent to the top right of the LCD screen is a button with a graphic next to it of a box with two vertical lines either side. Each time you press it it alters the amount of onscreen display information and it can also turn off the screen to save battery life The latter is useless in playback mode, but very useful when taking photos if you always use the optical viewfinder as I do.

BLACK SCREEN

DO NOT SEND TO A GARMIN REPAIR SHOP. I went through several iterations of piss poor service with them wanting an exceptional amount of money. I tore the unit apart (very easy), carefully pulled the LCD connector, wiped with rubbing alcohol, and replaced. I did my best at resealing the unit again, and it works perfectly. Took half an hour of my time and cost nothing.

Garmin's customer service people were polite but useless, but their repair depot subcontractor were useless and jerks!
