If we're talking about the Apple Music app i think something is wrong with your iOS. I'd suggest a reinstall of the iPhone.
If it's some third party app contact it's creator wo possibly forgot to notify iOS that the app wants to continue playing audio when screen is off. iOS stops every app without requirement for background computing time when going to sleep to save energy.
This unit needs a service visit. It may be a common problem with that model but to me it sound like a power supply issue as when you play a disc more power is used to rotate motors and move the sled. This is indicating to you that it is in a weakened condition and will soon fail more significantly. The problem may be as little as a solder joint or a defective Filter capacitor which is common in some models of equipment.
First, make sure you didn't download an instrumental.
Second, make sure the files are in a format that the player recognizes.
If both conditions hold, then upgrade the firmware - you have a corrupt DB.
