try adjusting your contrast. Sometimes a full blown contrast setting will blacken the screen. If that doesnt help...contact tech support of the company that manufactured the laptop.
On Battery or Plugged in? You didn't post the OS you are using, Open the Power Options, set to High Performance, open Change Plan settings, Adjust to your preference, Change Advanced settings to your preference.
Then brighten it. You brighten it by Holding Down either FN, CTRL or DEL key + Hit the corresponding key for brightening the display. For example on my computer I press and hold the FN Function key while I hit the UP Arrow key to brighten the screen.
The brighten/darken keys normally have the icon of a circle with sprockets around it like the sun or it looks like a washer that goes between a screw.
have you tried holding Fn and pressing the button with thr brightening symbol. on mine its Fn and F5 for brighten and Fn and F4 for dim.. buttons may vary but this should work if not you may have a fault with the sreen sensor that shuts the screen down when you close the notebook
