Re: Why won't washer wash on wash cycle?
- Kenmore washers have a water level detector that contains a switch. This switch has two parts. One is closed with no water in the tub and is part of the path for current that energizes the water inlet solenoids. As the tub fills the tube connected to the water level detector also starts to fill, trapping air in the tube. As the water level rises, pressure increases on one side of the water level detector. The two sides of this detector are separated by a rubber diaphragm. The pressure causes the diaphragm to expand pushing against the switch inside the detector. At a point, set by the water level selector adjustment on the machine, the switch inside the detector will toggle, cutting current from the inlet water solenoid, shutting off the water, and closes the contacts that feeds current to the timer and agitation begins. If yours fills but doesn't agitate this level detector is probably bad. Try tapping the level detector with the handle of a screwdriver. Half of the time the contacts will start to function and the machine will work. To access this detector locate two screws on the lower outside edges of the sloped portion of the top (sometimes under plastic covers )and remove them. Then lift the top by inserting a screwdriver in the space between the base and the front of the top prying up on the top to release the spring clips holding them together. Look for the black round thing mounted on the back of the inside of the top that has a clear tube and a couple of wires attached. I hope this helps. Dan
