I have a Kennmore side by side model # 522521 it all of a sudden the freezer part stopped freezing, the motor is still running. The Refrigerator part stopped cooling just after that.

The reset is called a klickson it is inside that black cover on the side of the compressor.
sometimes they do fail.

Setting it to 5 is what the manufacturer recommends. If you set it to 1 and the frig is still not cold, then you probably have a faulty cold control (thermostat)

Inside the fresh food compartment look for an opening that will allow you to turn the defrost timer clockwise slowly. When you hear it click the refrigerator should go into defrost. If the timer is bad it will need replaced. Let me know. Below is a photo of timer.
