actually there would have been some short circuit in the connections...

that would have affected the sound system...
so only you get the spikes.....check for the affected parts and replace them

I don't see what a motorhome has to so with it? But we do need to know make, model, and year of the TV? But TVs really don't have much in the way of programming usually, beyond just selecting an input. The programming mostly comes from the cable or satellite service. So where are you getting the signal from?

My thoughts is that after all these years one of the solder joints has cracked and there is enough current that builds up that it will jump accross the crack and work for a short time and then the componenet heats back up and 'well' off it goes.
15 years old. - you got some great use out of this TV.
Maybe time to look to get a new one - These types of TV's were only designed to work for 10 year and then throw them away. Be aware that the new ones are only made to last 3 to 4 years. I know - I don't like it either. They cost a lot more than that Panasonic did when it was new.

Depending on your market, it sounds like all of the other analogue channels have been terminated (not your son's fault) in order to provide stronger HD signals. You may need to run to wallmart and get that $50 decoder box.
