The generator hasn't, been used in a while and is not cranking. Gas is getting to the spark plug and the plug is clean. What could be the issue?

I've checked the gas bowl , a small amount of water in the - McCulloch ... water in the bowl not much also sprayed a small amount of starting fluid in .... If it hasn't been run and it had gas in it when it was stored, chances are the carb is messed up. When gas sits for a long period of time it turns into a varnish like substance. You can take some WD-40 and spray into the air inlet with the air filter off. Set the choke on and see if it will fire. It wont run very well but it should fire. If it does rebuild the carb.

The first thing to do is to check and see if it is getting any spark to the plug.
To check for spark, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
Remove the spark plug from the cylinder.
Attach the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
Using insulated tools so you do not get shocked, hold the base of the plug to the bare metal of the engine.
Crank the engine and observe the plug for spark. There should be a bright blue spark jumping the gap of the spark plug.
Is there spark present?
If not, we need to look at the ignition system.
If there is spark, remove the air filter.
While cranking the engine, spray in some gas or carb cleaner - do not use starting fluid.
Will this allow the engine to try and start?
If so, your carburetor is dirty.
As gas gets old, it turns to varnish and clogs up the passageways inside the carburetor, not allowing enough gas to get to the engine.
This condition is cumulative. Every time gas sits, the varnish builds up just a little more, like coats of paint, until eventually gas can not flow. It will not happen overnight, but the symptoms can show up all of a sudden, even while simply stopping to refill with gas.
The use of fuel additives, such as Sta-Bil or Sea Foam will not stop this process from happening. They will greatly slow it down, but the gas will still go bad.
When this happens, either the engine simply will not start, or it will not run without the choke on (this reduces the amount of air getting pulled into the engine, changing the fuel/air mixture), or it will run but surges.
Another issue that varnish in the carb can cause is that the varnish may not allow the float needle to seal properly against the seat, causing the flow of gas to not shut off when the bowl is full. The result will be gas overflowing the carb and running into the cylinder, and possibly out the air intake. If the gas gets into the cylinder, it will seep past the rings and down into the crankcase. This will be evidenced by your oil level being over-full and/or the oil smelling like gas.
The only 2 solutions are to either replace the carburetor or give it a good, thorough cleaning.
When removing the carb, make sure to take a good picture, or make a good drawing of where all springs and linkages are attached. This will make reassembly much easier.
Most people believe that cleaning a carb involves removing the bowl and wiping it out, then spraying some carb cleaner through it.
This is simply insufficient.
To properly clean the carb, you must remove it, disassemble it (making sure to remove all non-metal parts), and soak it in a commercial solvent for several hours. Soaking it overnight is even better.
Then clean all solvent off with a spray type carb cleaner, making sure to get lots of cleaner into every hole and passage there is. Pay special attention to the tiny holes in the bore of the carb, under the throttle plate for the carbs that have these holes. Use lots of cleaner. And make sure to wear safety goggles to avoid getting the over spray into your eyes. There will be over spray.
Dry the carb with low pressure compressed air.
When reassembling the carb, make sure to use a carb kit, when one is available for your carb.
Occasionally, even a good cleaning is not going to be sufficient, and you may end up having to replace the carb anyhow. Be prepared for this.
If spraying in the gas or carb cleaner allows the engine to actually start and run, you will still need to clean the carb - as the idle circuit is most likely restricted.

The plug is under the gas tank. They can be difficult to get to and you may have to remove/loosen the tank. If you can remove the spark plug wire you could test for spark. If you have a spark and it still doesn't crank the spark plug is probably the least of your worries unless you drained the tank and the carb (most people don't.)
If you have a spark give a spritz of starter fluid into the carb after removing the air filter and see if it runs for even a bit. If it does fire and doesn't run, clean the carb.

The problem is related to the engine. When a load is put on the generator, the engine's throttle will want to open to maintain RPMs. If your carburetor is misadjusted or gummed/varnished, when the throttle opens, you will get a fuel starvation and the engine will die. If the generator is used regularly and hasn't sat for a while, first check to make sure the spark plug is good since you don't want to make a carb. adjustment using a worn plug. After you adjust the carb. manuallly flick the throttle to ensure that the engine doesn't 'stutter' or die out. If it does, increase the gas in the air/gas mixture and if that doesn't solve it, remove, disassemble and clean the carburetor.

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

set the run switch to run and crank the engine look for a spark if theirs a spark
re install the plug.
check the gas line at the carb by removing the
hose and turning on the gas valve under the tank.
if gas flows then replace the hose back.
if theirs no gas then you have a plugged fuel line or gas valve
their is also a screen in the tank attached to the valve remove it and install a in line filter
it will be easier to replace later if it happens again.
remove the air filter and crank engine with the choke closed
check for a gas smell in the carb hole by smell after cranking engine.
if wile checking for a smell of gas at the carb and their was none then you can have a stuck float or
gummed up carb remove and dissemble clean and at that point rebuild the kits are only around $20.00 and a float $6.00+.
if ok remove the spark plug again and set run switch to off
place a finger over the plug hole crank finger should be blow-en from the hole
and a wosh of air if ok. go to next step.
if the pressure did not blow your finger off you may have a stuck valve or a bent one
this will require removing the head for repairs.
take in for service.
if there is no spark with plug removed remove wires from the run switch and connect
together and remove wire from the low oil sensor crank. if spark replace the wire back
on low oil sensor crank if no spark replace the low oil sensor reassemble run.
if the is no spark with the wire on the sensor then replace the run switch.
re assemble run. if their is no spark with oil sensor disconnected and run switch wires
connected to each other remove the front air flow cover to expose the coil check wires for any
bare spots repair as needed. on the top on the flywheel theirs a coil their will be a spade plug
or a wire small that is a kill wire disconnect and crank check spark if spark then that wire is shorted
in the loop and you have to trace it it will go to a wire stud mounted to a plate under
the carb with a plastic mount this can be cracked and shorting bypass and try again still
no spark use a match book cover and lower the coil to the flywheel with the match book cover
in be tween and disconnect the small wire crank if no spark the coil unit is the issue replace
some people will say sand clean the tops of the magnets built in to the flywheel this is a myth
it don't matter but feel free to clean anyways it don't hurt.
this seams allot but it is a complete diagnoses the fuel,spark and air system if all this is ok and still don't run you have a serious internal issue the engine will either need
major work or replacement. i hope this all helps you.
