Hi.. IN CASE YOU DONT NO THAT A CAR /TRUCK /OR BUS HAS TO COME TO A FULL STOP BEFORE CHANGING GEARS FROM ANY GEAR TO ANY OTHER EVEN STOP.
EVEN AUTO MATIC BOX
THE ONLY ONE YOU CAN CHANGE ON THE GO IS A PRE SELECTOR BOX.
Check the gear box oil level sounds low to me i had a similar problem with a auto box car before and as for your steering it could be a worn steering rack if the oil level is good
Sounds like big end bearing gone and oil would probably be coming from gear box and engine seam and falling on exhaust its sounds like a pretty stuffed motor but everything is fixable depending on how much coin it coast and if its worth it cya Neil
I would say some gear teeth are missing or the bearings are worn, this particular model did suffer gear box troubles, Molyslip Gear Oil treatment will help.
Yes a CV joint could cause it. Look under the car with someone putting it in gear. If any of the shafts are turning it is a joint if not the diff in the transmission is gone. Good luck.

my good friend I believe the solution I give might be not good for you as to what you state It sounds that you are loosing your automatic gear box. Have you ever changed the oil & filter of your Gear box? If not that was the reason.
Believe it or not there are some problems you should take to the dealer. It never was the gear box, its a defective steering column bushing. That problem had a factory notice and the dealer would have diagnosed it immediately an fixed it free parts +$40.install. Tahoes get that problem.
