My check engine light wont come on dash with key turned forward vehicle failed nysi because it states light is on .Changed bulbs in cluster still nothing.

Possible bad contacts in bulb holder or ripped copper dash contact where bulb holder screws in also check for bad solder joints in cluster or contact in harness plugs for cluster//////do a ecm self test (a) just turn the key to the on position all dash lights including check engine should be on then go off except for oil battery/charging if you see your check engine abs at first then they go off this is normal and ok if not look for bad connection coming into the cab from the firewall harness bus connector this comes from the ecm

When you turn the key on (just on ,not start ) the check engine light doesn't come on ? Does the car start an run ? Maybe the bulb is burnt out , seen that a few times .
Have the vehicle checked for code's

Hello Susan,

Your check engine light is located in your vehicles dash cluster and will only illuminate when a fault is detected..no detected faults..no light, although it should illuminate (to prove it is working) for a short period of time at each engine start up.

If your light does not confirm operation during the start cycle, explore for access to the lights wiring connector behind the instrument panel cluster to see if you can easily remove the lamp from the cluster...sometimes it it easier to remove the dash trim bezels and remove the cluster from the dash to change lamps.

Of course your Toyota's engine management systems are controlled by an computer generally referred to as a ECM (engine control unit (ECU), also commonly called an engine control module) so if your lamp fails to illuminate during the start cycle the problem may not be due to a simple lamp failure.

Probably won't pass. The light MUST come on when key is turned to on, or else something is wrong-maybe the engine computer or maybe the wire from pcm to the diagnostic connector or to the dash.
Now I see you say the bulb has voltage? May need to look into possible fault with the pcm.

the dash is big place, you meant cluster?
please state at least one bad bulb.
there are over 20 lamps that glow now
most are LED now, and are NO removable.

eg:back ground lamps? dash dimmer set too low?
CEL /SES dead.
VFD dead.?
warning lights dead, 1 or all?
when you key on any car the whole cluster, glows, this is called
power up self test, if this fails, you have a dead battery or blown fuse.
post exact symtoms and can advice exact fix.
or read the FSM.

you put the key on without starting and it does light ! you should have a little 5 amp fuse or are there other things not working to check all fuses put key on and with test light check all the fuses you find at both ends you should have power at both ends some fuses wont have power like headlights or defrost till you turn it on sometimes the outside fuse box gets corrosion inside on the wires and causes a open circuit as well if you always owned the truck you know that nobody has taken out the light in the dash :) if not sure then take out the dash cluster (speedo) and look if the bulbs are not there or burnt

When you turn the key 'on' the Check Engine Light is supposed to illuminate-that is also a check for the system-they probably removed the CEL bulb or the fuse for it-not good, and easy enough to verify-if so I would register a complaint to any state agency that regulates auto repair or emission stations. A disabled CEL will not in and of itself cause a failure in most states,but a code will-You will need to have the car scanned to see what the code is, and then come back on here with the actual code for help.

Well you can please follow the below steps -
1. Remove the two screws on the underside of the dash cowl.
2. Pull off the trim bezel that surrounds the gauge cluster and dash assembly by pulling it forward with your hands.
3. Remove the four screws that hold the gauge cluster in place.
4. Slide the gauge cluster forward, and remove the electrical plugs from the back of the cluster.
5. Replace the bulbs that are blown. Turn each bulb counterclockwise to unlock it from the dash cluster assembly, then pull the bulb straight out of the housing. Insert the new bulb, align the tabs on the bulb with the notches in the back of the cluster and turn it clockwise to lock it into the housing.
6. Reassemble the dash. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Post comments for more help or information........

The light is located next to the gate adjar light in the upper left area of the cluster. It at the 2500 rpm mark on the tachometer.
I would take the vehicle to your local Auto Zone and ask them to scan your car for trouble codes. The will scan the car for you at no charge. Write the codes down and respond back.
