I purchased and installed all new ink cartridges and performed maintenance on the machine-check nozzle, cleaning, deep cleaning, auto head align, plus head align print. The printer will not copy from the platen glass and will not print from the computer. The only thing that the printer will print is test pages from maintenance performed.
Try unplugging from your computer, uninstall printer on your computer and reinstall.

Okay, this was the problem I posted a few days ago. It's fixed now, so in case you have the same problem with smearing, here's what the help desk from Canon suggested: Open the cover and remove the ink cartridges. There is a gray lever in front of the cartridges. Lift this lever and the printhead can be easily removed.
Our printhead had a buildup of black ink on the surface. I carefully removed this with rubbing alcohol. I let the printhead dry and replaced everything. No more smearing. Imagine a help-desk that actually helped!

Please check the seating of ink cartridge. when you replaced it, it should make a little click sound confirming that the ink cartridge has seated properly. Please repeat the process once more. Also when you remove the ink cartridge check if the thin strip on the ink pad has been removed. If not then remove it before fixing it again.
