Very rare a motor fails on a hoover drier normally its the capacitor that fails. you can hear the motor humming but the drum wont rotate to proof its the capacitor turn the machine on press start listen for the motor humming open the the door of drier turn the drum by hand fast then shut the door as fast has possible then the drum should start going around . then this proves its the capacitor fault you are doing the job of the capacitor giving the motor a start .
Hi John, W/D here. Most likely scenario: squealing was either a belt or a bearing. Failure to run is probably a broken belt. Gain access to the back of the drier, with the power disconnected. Open the back and check the belt. If broken, replace it, and then rotate the drier by hand, listening for additional squeals and squeaks. If no other issues are noted, replace the back cover, plug it back in and try it out. Best regards, --W/D--
If a noise is heard or even a HUM you can use a small tube to probe with one side kept to your ear. Trace the noise to the actual unit , if this is the motor humming check the capacitor as a faulty capacitor will not start the motor. Also check for free movement of the motor drive as if there is tightness in the drive the motor will not work.
does it make noise like the motor is running but the belt is not attached? or does it hum and stop after you let go of the start button ?
lets assume it hums... open the door you will see a little button for the door switch, hold that down and have someone else press and hold the start button, CAREFULLY spin the drum clockwise if the drum spins on its own then you will need a new motor and probably a blower cause typically you have to break them off and i mean break all the way down to the stem just so you can take the motor off, atleast thats the way i did it after trying the other way and needing stitches.
if the motor sounds like its running but the drum doest turn, you will probably need a new belt.
lastly if you press the start button and nothing happens, check for voltage, second check door switch, next check for continuity with a multimeter at the thermal fuse, with the wires disconnected from the thermal fuse.
You must see if this is the hum of the motor or that of a mechanical friction of the motor assembly. If the motor is humming please check the capacitor that is connected to the motor, change with the value specified on the capacitor.
If there is hum on the drive use good lubrication remove and reset.use degreasing spray to ease off friction
