You might need a new battery. I had a similar problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab S (8.5" screen). It wouldn't stay charged for long, and would turn off if the battery level got to 1/2 to 1/4. I've had the tablet ever since it came out years ago, so I thought maybe the battery had lost its ability to charge or maintain a constant flow of electricity to keep the electronics happy. I ordered a replacement battery offline and have had no problems. I figured buying a battery and trying that as a fix is cheaper than buying a new tablet. (If it didn't work, I would buy a new tablet.) Now when the battery level gets low, the tablet stays on, doesn't flicker off or freeze like it used to do, and works okay. You can watch a video online how to open the tablet back and replace the battery, plus you get it on a DVD with the battery. The original battery is glued into the tablet; it seems as though you're destroying the tablet when you try to lift it out -- but if you go slow and gently pry it up, it should be okay. It was a gamble and it paid off.

Your battery is failing.
Laptops have the same problem. Either replace the tablet (if it is still under warranty), get a new one, or tear it open to get a new battery.
If you get a new one, you can move all the non Barnes and Noble items onto your computer. Anything you bought from Barnes and Noble is stored under your account and password on their server.
Then, do a factory reset on your old one.
It is usually NOT WORTH IT to rip open a tablet to change the battery.
Get your receipts and warranty info and follow warranty instructions. If you don't have receipts I doubt you can get free fix. Call the manufacturer customer service for help. Look up contact info online by searching with Google or Bing.
bad cable or bad battery. I bought a power supply for computer and power cord was actually bad. had a spare and worked like a charm.
usb connectors get misaligned sometimes. the cables are cheaper then move on to battery.
This tablet does t reset with the power button unlike other Android devices. When you hold down the on/off switch, it only drains the battery. If you see the color indicator still charging, allow a full charge. Then, only stay put and pulse the button for a moment quick and let it rest few seconds to try again and again. Only when u see a light coming out of the screen, and I recommend you do this with the power cord on, you hold the power switch down until the rebooting is iniciated. Let go til it is finish and see where the problem is. More likely, like mine, the Settings stop working and needs tune up for the CPU. Never leave an application running when closing your system. Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall.
ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected thebattery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time.
Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced.
