If you check the drain right below the sink there will be a rod that drops down from the stopper knob at the top of the sink. That ros will be connected with a spring clip to a lever rod that goes into the drain. There will be a nut that unscrews so you can pull that lever rod out. The stopper will then lift out.

Bill will be right about cleaning the P trap (s traps are not plumbing code compliant in canada)
It unscrews but from the underneath up
you will have to remove the "S" trap only as what ever it is will be stuck in that bend
