What do I need regarding preamp/cartridge matching?

I got a Gemini XL 100 from a friend. It looks like it has a Gemini CN1000 cartridge (it has no markings on it, but after researching, it looks to be right). Do I need a preamp for this turntable? And if so, what is the voltage output of the Gemini CN 1000 cartridge (in mV's)?

Cartridges require no special pre-amp. If your amp has one built in the sound from the deck will come out at the same level as other functions. If the amp has no inbuilt pre-amp you will still hear sound (if the cartridge is working) only the volume will be too low to listen to. All you need do is connect the record player to the amp and see if you can hear the sound. If you can't then you need a magnetic cartridge pre-amp. By the way if you need a new cartridge you don't have to stick with a Gemini make. You can use any one you want as long as it will fit into the headshell. There some better makes of cartridge out there, that will give better sound quality. It all depends on what you want to spend on a cartridge!

I have an Gemini XL-100 ( only the turntable itself) , and I am wondering what are the missing parts I need to make it work properly.

I don't understand what you mean. Are the electronics parts missing does it have a power supply or is it just the cartridge that's not there?

you likely need a preamp between your turntable and the stereo. see details at above link.

Not loud enough, sound is low. plays well but very low sound

Hi, sounds to me like you have got it connected to your amp via an aux or cd input. Turntables need to be connected via phono input. If no phono input is available you need to run it through a mixer or preamp first then into your amp. I recommend you get a good quality preamp with RIAA EQ curve included. I have designed and built our own Styluscity branded preamp. There are cheaper options on the market however when it comes to audio products quality is very much relevant to cost. Cheers john. Turntable problem

You will need a phono preamp. Ipods, radios and cd players all give out a LINE level signal..which means you can plug headphones or speakers, adjust volume and be set. A turntable needs a phono preamp. Usually a dj mixer or stereo receiver with a phono input is all that is needed. A simple phono pre amp is like $20 from radio shack.

keep me posted.
