Hi Angus Christie
Well, this error is common, not so easy to fix, so i'll tell you a solution, but think about buying a new printer, or if it's still in warranty, give that to Canon...
Error 5B00 means: Internal Waste Ink Tank is Approximately Full, or completely FULL.
What is a Waste Ink Tank?
Everytime you print, install a new cartridge, the printer does a cleaning cycle... how the printer cleans the nozzles? simply sucking ink out of the printhead through a pump, and where this wasted ink goes? into this hidden tank inside the printer...
Once the tank is full, you can attempt to open your printer (unscrew, dismantle), locate the purge pump tubing, take another tube and connect that tube to the purge tube, then take this tube out of the printer and connect this tube to an external waste ink tank, and then reset the printer purge value with a specific software...
If you just reset the counter without taking the tube out in an external waste ink tank, the printer will be able to print, but it will leaks ink from every side of the printer, damaging the surface you placed the printer and the surrounding things...
For any futher questions and if you wanna try this solution write me at [email protected], and i'll give you a guide and the software :)
