Could possibly have thread pieces wrapped in it that are locking the bobbincase in place. Probably need to take in for service.

Hello LInda.
After opening the door, there are two clips (one on either side) which must be depressed to open the bobbin case assembly.

How to reassemble the bobbin case in a bernina 830

It may be worthwhile buying a replacement bobbin case. They aren't really very expensive, plus it will have the correct tension pre-set.

How do I change bobbin tension on a bernina 830

Generally the tension on the bobbin is set and the tension on the upper thread is balanced against it. To set the tension on your bobbin remove the bobbin case clean out any lint and tighten the screw closest to the slot in the case. This can be done with a gauge or you can use the bobbin case as a weight. With a full bobbin the tension should be tight enough to keep the bobbin and case from free falling. Caution should be used as often other problems can create loops on the bottom of your fabric and they are not a tension issue. Messing up your tension will leave you with two problems. Don't let this from trying to fix your tension but be able to return it to the previous settings if it does not resolve your problem.

Today, my 830 stopped sewing and the bobbincase opened after a whirring noise during embroidery. I adjusted the thread and tried again. It continues to open and is activated in regular sewing mode when I...

It may be that the door closure sensor has got fluff in it, so the machine thinks that the bobbin door has been opened - the automatic bobbin preenter will then rotate the bobbin case out, and open the door in the process. You should probably have this looked-at by a properly certificated 830 service engineer - it's a very complicated machine, however, you could try VERY CAREFULLY, with a long fine paintbrush, just brushing any fluff and lint out of the sensor. Switch the machine OFF with the bobbin door closed. Open the bobbin door and look on the left-hand-side of the hinged-bottom of the door - you'll see a semicircular black plastic part secured to the left-hand end - it's got a couple of notches in it. When you close the door, these notches interrupt a couple of light sensors on a small circuit-board that you can probably just see behind the white plastic cover. With a fine brush, with long bristles, VERY VERY CAREFULLY, push the bristles through where the semicircular plastic part moves between the sensors, and with luck, this will remove any fluff that's causing the problem. If that fails, it is possible that the 'console mechanism' has gone out of alignment - this seems to be rather common on these machines and can happen if you've had a needle crunch which sometimes happens if you apply too much pressure to the thread when starting an embroidery - in that case, the only solution is to have the machine looked-at professionally. Good Luck

Old bernina 830 stitching problem: tight

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.

G'day.
Firstly, dont flood it with oil - it will end up making a mess for you!
What I'm going to tell you is basic, but work thru it.
1. take out the bobbin case and swing the two latcjes to the side so you can remove the hook. Inspect the point VERY closely. should be sharp and absolutely smooth. ANY burr or nick MUST be removed. (have you broken a needle recently??)
2. Lay the mahine on its back, refit the hook and lock into place. Put in a BRAND NEW needle With the bobbin case still removed and the machine turned ON and in MAXIMUM Zig Zag width, turn the hand wheel in the direction it normally rotates - towards you. When the needle swings to the Left and is on its wasy UP, the hook point must pass behind the needle a little before the eye of the needle reaches the arc that the hook point travels thru. Same on the Right swing. If it does, GOOD.
3. Wind an empty bobbin with GOOD QUALITY THREAD. It should wind on reasonably even and TIGHT. When you push your fingernail into the thread it must NOT be spungy. Insert bobbin into bobbin case (IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION). Hold the tail of the thread and allow bobbin case to dangle, it should not drop down until you give the thread a little jerk. It should drop a little then stop. Insert bobbin case into machine, thread top of machine CORRECTLY. Set top tention to normal, test sew.
Let me know how this goes.
