Our TV suddenly went from working fine to a black screen. After doing some online research I tried out the flashlight test and discovered you could see the image in the back ground. What kind of part should I be looking to replace for this. I'm guessing the tcon board but not certain. Thanks!

NO....You must pay attention to all numbers on the back of the TV. Verify these with your tech or contact your LG customer support for the correct board numbers. If the screen was broken I doubt if you can repair this for less than it cost to replace. The screen for this one runs at about $650.00. Good Luck and good advice!
SOURCE: lg lcd can a bad tcon board kill all power
Yes , it can be a short on the board that will ask the SMPS unit to protect the power so as to switch off. So even with a multi-meter check you will be able to trace the short on the board, the drivers or any capacitor that is cutting off the power which must solve the issue.

It could be a bad T-con, but it could also be a faulty LVDS (cable that connects the t-con to the main board), or you can have a main board fault. It sounds like your panel isn't getting power. The T-con board should be located top center on the backside of the set. It should be housed under a metal cover. BEWARE, some panel have the T-Con built into the LCD panel. If this is the case, you will have to replace the entire panel if the t-con is bad. Simply go to www.shopjimmy.com, and type in you actual TV model # in the search box. This will bring up all the parts available for your model. The results will also bring up pictures of the parts so you can see exactly what they look like.

Fault with its main board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ . In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
SOURCE: How do I test my main board in my 42 LG LED TV?
Testing the board is too complicated to try to explain in this forum. If the tv won't turn on with either the remote or with the tv buttons, the main board is failed and needs to be replaced. I have gotten some tv's working by replacing the EE prom on the main board, but finding the proms is hit and miss. Go to ShopJimmy.com and see if they happen to carry one for your tv.
