I just re-loaded FW version 2.4 (freshly downloaded) and the problem went away.
Not sure if the original was corrupted or if there was an un-announced change to version 2.4.

I fixed this by downloading a firmware update from the Samsung support website. I recommend using the "USB" method as it is less prone to other problems. There are instructions for up-loading to your BluRay player on the website, but basically you plug in the USB stick with the right file on it, turn on the machine (and your TV) and it takes care of itself. Re: My BD-P1500 will not recognise a new non-blu-ray...
If its not a Blu-Ray disc, it wont have new technology that the Blu-Ray does not have installed so its unlikely a firmware update wil fix this as its generally for new Blu-Rays.

Here is a video instruction on how to hook up the P1600 model to Net Flix.
A firmware update may be required to get NetFlix on the P1500 model.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/BD-P1500 Otherwise, I have seen little information on the P1500 supporting NetFlix.
Please give feedback for this answer, thanks.
The player needs a firmware update. Your issue is a direct result of this. Go to the Samsung website to access the appropriate download or simply connect your player to your modem with an ethernet cable (TV needs to remain connected to player for menu navigation) and update firmware.
OR GO TO www.samsung.com click Support then Downloads and enter your model number. There's instructions for downloading firmware and loading via usb stick or cd.
went to samsung web site and aquired firmware update for a thumbdrive install [USB on back of BD-P1500] This seemed to work and part of the update from previous early firmware versions was to "improve the ability to properly display all DVD types"
it seems that samsung is posting it's firm updates online @ samsung.com i had same problem with my BD-UP5000 its connected to the internet when i go to the menue to update on the bluray player it said i had the latest update went online and found a new firmware on there web site, check samsung web site
Nope. The laser mechanism seems to have developed a preference of its won and refuses to work with DVD media.
You have already done a firmware update so that is ng. Could be that when you updated it to play newer blue rays, the update messed up unit for dvd playback. Happens.
But do not sweat - that unit has a one year warranty - use it.
hey same problem here, but I just downloaded the CD version anyways... then dropped the .RUF file onto my desktop, selected it, burnt it to a CD-R (RW will also work) and popped it into the BD-P1500, so far it seems to be running along steadily in the update process... hope this solves your problem.
