My laptop runs to slow why? Gene

Hi Sally.
I am assuming you are asking about Cortana.
Cortana is a voice activated personal assistant that you can use to get Weather forecasts, remind you of appointments and/or dates, send email, Etc. A lot of people find this program helpful, and a lot of people find this program annoying, ( BECAUSE IT SLOWS THEIR COMPUTER DOWN). You can disable this program two ways: 1st way, launch Cortana from the search bar on the task bar, click settings from the left pane, and under Cortana the first option I believe, slide the button switch to the off position; 2nd way, type gpedit.msc in the search box to open the editor, go to Local computer policy/ Computer configuration/ Administrative templates/ Search. Then double click the policy named allow Cortana. I believe this is it for the second way. Hope this helps. Let me know.

It dont work on lenovo

There are many reasons y0our laptop is running slow.
1. Make sure the ventilation holes of the laptop are not blocked with dirt, or blocked by placing laptop on your lap, or a non-hard surface. When the CPU gets hot, it will throttle down to run slower. You can install a temperature monitoring program to determine if the CPU is running too hot. 2. If the temperature is within normal range, then check to see the amount of free space on your HDD. Keep at least 10% or more free. 3. If that is ok, then you may not have enough ram to run all the programs. Windows 7, or 8 should have at least 4GB or more RAM. 4. If that is ok too, then you may have a lot of unnecessary programs running. Run a virus scanner program to get rid of viruses, etc. 5. Uninstall unused programs. Sort by date to see which programs were installed most recently, By doing this if you can remember when you started having problems, you can uninstall programs installed around that time that may be causing your problems. As you can see a lot of things can cause slowness. Good luck!

Should I wipe my laptop (I have the disk to do so)?? What should I do??

yes, reinstalling your disk would be a good idea. do you have a anti-virus program on your laptop? or malewarebytes program?
do you use google chrome & firefox a lot? if you do, you need to see if there are adjustment you can make to these programs, so they don't rule your laptop, that way you make the decision for you laptop and not the programs.

Sony vio computer running slow

Carla, I hate to over-simplify, but have you checked to see how many programs are running in the background? With time, lots of clutter can build up in this area- unnecessary programs eat up massive amounts of processor speed, and often there are even programs that have been uninstalled or removed that still attempt to load at start up.
First step to see what kind of mess you have to clean up, boot the laptop, then go to Start>Run & enter taskmgr - this will show a list of currently loaded programs. Then you can go into msconfig & disable selected programs from loading at start up.
If you are not sure which programs can be disabled, post a copy of the results from running taskmgr here, & I or someone else would be glad to help you sort it all out.

Hi. I don't know about YOUR computer, but I spend a lot of time on my Compaq laptop. Every so often, it begins to make more noise and run a bit slower, even though I clean out cookies and compress files, etc. I took it to a nice local computer guy at

Home Computer Repair
7210 Us Highway 301 N, Ellenton, FL 34222
(941) 722-0454

He cleaned dust out of it and ran some programs to get rid of any bugs. It ran a lot faster and cooler afterwards.

Another reason your laptop might be hot is if you have had it a few years and the battery is getting tired. When I changed batteries, my computer ran quieter and cooler. I bought my new battery at Batteries Plus in the Ellenton Outlet Mall complex. I got a generic and it is doing a great job for me.

Hope these suggestions help you.

You are going to need to run an antivirus program that runs before the operating system starts..if you can, try going online on another computer to search for a program called VBA Rescue..this program loads LINUX into your computer and them searches and destroys the virus' . I have had much success with this program as worms are very hard to remove...I wouldn't even try to run your laptop as you may cause unrepairable damage to the laptop..if you need additional assistance...you can email me at [email protected]

Slow Laptop Computer

Hi,

There could be a variety of reason(s) why the laptop is slow. If initially the unit was fast enough for your applications, it maybe that there are a number of programs running simultaneously and/or harmful to your PC. Pls try:
  • run/scan with your antivirus and/or an online virus scanner/remover;
  • Download AdAware by Lavasoft, install, scan and delete unwanted entries;
  • Go to Start, Run, type "msconfig", goto Startup tab and uncheck all programs except those that you feel are necessary such as your antivirus;
  • In your System Properties Advanced tab, Performance Settings button, select "Adjust for best performance", and in the Advanced tab, change your Virtual Memory to double your onboard real memory.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
