The belt and pullies appear in good condition. I hear the issue primarily during the agitation portion of the cycle. It barely makes the sound during spin. The washer makes the noise whether full of water and clothes or empty (dry). The pump was able to empty the load that was in it when I found the issue, but I am afraid to run more loads for fear it will break for good and I will have a tub full of water and no way to empty it. This washer often bangs during the spin cycle, and has for years. I expect that this is a separate issue. I saw some white debris inside the machine under the tub. I would like to address that after I am sure I can get it to actually run correctly.
The sounds of 'metal grinding/banging" begs the question of whether or not its even safe? If you hear that sound all the time or as you say ONLY during the agitation cycle suggests that you be able to service the tub/motor mounts in the underneath chass--which is a heavy-duty technician job. A Maytag technician has the tools you need. Or the obvious...get another one from a friend who is upgrading to a new washer and hands it down to you for a little change.
Testimonial: "I'm more handy than you might expect. What are the part numbers for the tub/motor mounts? What is involved in the service procedure?"
