Stick in a little more RAM

Generally, the faster the RAM, the faster the processing speed. With faster RAM, you increase the speed at which memory transfers information to other components.

5 Best Ways to Speed Up your Old Laptop/PC

Uninstall Unrequired Software from your System
The first and foremost step to give your system a significant boost in speed is to uninstall unnecessary software. This unnecessary software consumes crucial system resources such as computation power and storage making the system slow to use for the current ongoing task. You can do this by following these simple steps.

Launch the Control Panel in your system.
Click on Uninstall a Program under the Program title.
Navigate and find the unnecessary programs present here and uninstall them.

Restrict Startup Processes to Speed up your Laptop
Startup Processes are those software programs that start running automatically as soon as you boot up your system. Too many startup processes will result in slow execution of the rest of the programs as the system resources will get busy in starting the programs that have been set to run after booting. You can easily set which programs you want to run as a startup by following these simple steps.
Press this Key combination control+shift+Esc together to launch the task manager.
Click on the Startup Tab, you can see here the list of programs that run on startups based on their impact.
To disable a program from running at startup, right-click on that software and click on Disable.
disable

Perform a Disk Cleanup
Disk Clean-up is another effective method to boost the speed of your slow system. Disk Clean-up helps to release the space occupied by temporary files, offline thumbnails, and web data that accumulate over the disk in a period of time. To perform a disk cleanup, follow these simple steps.
Open 'This PC/ My Computer.
thispc
Right-click on the disk drive that you want to perform disk cleanup.
Click on Properties.
In the bottom right, click on disk cleanup.
Disk Clean up utility will display how much space will be released after deleting the data.
Check the required checkboxes and click on OK.
Upgrade to a Solid State Drive (SSD's) and Boost system's Speed
This method involves changing your existing storage hardware to a better one. Conventional Hard disks are a lot slower than the modern Solid State Drives that offers up to 50 times faster speeds than hard disk. There are 2 ways by which you can install an SSD in your system.

Replace your Hard disk with an SSD.

Provide more RAM to your system to Speed up
This is another effective method that involves upgrading your existing hardware by providing more RAM. Adding more RAM to your system will ensure that your system handles all the tasks effectively during multi-tasking. There are a lot of high-performance RAM options available from reputed companies such as Corsair, Kingston, and even WD elements. You can pick one as per your requirement and budget.

My system is running slow

Slow computer If you have a virus program installed, it is most likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computer especially if you have a large hard drive. After scanning is completed then the computer will be faster.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you do not use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this will remove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plus running Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access files off the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.. Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out at least once a month.
If you have 512Mb of RAM installed then installing more RAM will speed up your computer. After installing your graphics card, you may need to disable the built-in graphics card in the BIOS for the new graphics card to work properly.

I have a acer laptop that I let my son use and I've noticed that it is very slow and also it gets very hot. What do you think the problem is?

Dear Kristen,
1. Your laptop is running slow because there are too many applications running in the background. Go through the start menu and remove them if you don't need them.
2. Defragment your hard disks. Use a tool such as O & O Defrag Pro.
3. Your Acer heating up is a normal issue. Some older acer laptops heat up quite a lot. This is not an issue in laptops purchased after 1/1/2010.
If you are worried, get your laptop checked and serviced by a qualified technician or just simply hand it over to the nearest service center.

I have low memory and my laptop is slow

Toshiba laptops are not intrinsically slow computers and more often than not a slow computer is caused by a software rather than a hardware problem. Computers get bogged down by running too many processes at once, having the information in the hard drive stored in different parts of the disk (fragmented) and computer virus, worm or spy ware infestations. Of course, sometimes a computer simply doesn't have the hardware to run certain programs or will have a hardware issue that needs to be fixed.

Disk Cleanup

1.Click "Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup" to open the Disk Cleanup program.

2.Select the hard drive that you want to clean up if you have more than one hard drive and then click "Ok" to get started.

3.Wait for the Disk Cleanup tool to calculate how much space it will be able to save by compressing your files. Compressing the files in your hard drive will open up space that in turn helps your computer access information faster.

4.Click the "More Options" tab on the "Disk Cleanup" window that appears and then click the "Clean Up" button within the "Windows Components" section. This will allow you to select what Windows Components you want to disable. Disabling Windows Components will make your computer software by diminishing the programs that are running.

5.Click the "Clean Up" button within the "Installed Programs" section. This will allow you to select what computer programs you no longer wish to have installed on your computer and uninstall them. Uninstall programs that have not been used in a long time such as old video games to speed up your Toshiba laptop.

6.Click the "Clean Up" button with the "System Restore" section. This will delete all but the most recent of your backup files so that you don't have useless backup files taking up space and slowing down your laptop computer.

7.Click the "Disk Cleanup" tab and then select all the files from the "Files to Delete" section that you want to delete. This will delete all those files from your computer making your computer faster by freeing up memory space. Click "Ok" to delete the files and exit Disk Cleanup.

Fan

1.Blow pressurized air from a pressurized air can into the Fan slits on the bottom and side of the Toshiba laptop to clear it of dust. A dusty, dirty fan will cause speed issues on your Toshiba laptop.

2.Power off the computer, remove the battery and all external devices and then unscrew all the screws that have a keyboard picture on it.

3.Remove the keyboard from your Toshiba laptop and on the inner, upper, left hand corner, on the side of the monitor, you'll see the fan.

4.Blow pressurized air into the fan to clear the dust and then replace the keyboard, screws, battery, external devices and power the computer back on.

Processes

1.Press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys on your Toshiba laptop keyboard simultaneously and then select "Start Task Manager."

2.Click the "Processes" tab and take inventory of all the processes running on your computer.

3.Right-click on each process with your Username to the right of the process name and then select "End Process." Do not end processes that are vital to your computer running properly such as explore.exe or processes that don't have your username to the right of the process name.

4.Restart your computer if you end a vital process.

My laptop running slow and net browsing very slow my configeration windows7 original ,320 gb HD,3GB memorry

There are several reason for the computer to be running slow for the start please try restarting the computer to safe mode with networking (Steps given below) and check if your browsing speed is better. If your internet browsing speed not better in safe mode with networking then you need to contact your ISP to complain about slow speed.

If it is working fine in safe mode, then some of the software (example: Antivirus / Internet Security / Firewall) is slowing down your computer. Please try removing it. Also try reducing the color scheme, use a non aero theme and see if your comptuer is working fine. If so your processor is not able to take the load of windows 7 visual effects aswell as other programs running in the background at the same time

How can I make my laptop works faster?

You don't say what OS, assuming XP
I'd try the following:
Run windows disk cleanup and defrag
Run a cleanup program like ccleaner
Run a registry cleaner like regcure or eusing
If that doesn't help add more memory (you should have at least 1GB and preferably 2) or switch to Linux :-)
