You didn't include make and model TV; so only generalized answers are possible.
Typical RCA phono jacks like those shown in the blue box of the stereo amplifier below:
will accept cables to connect to other audio devices. The audio RCA jacks are color coded RED (right) and WHITE (left) for low level stereo signals. Some have YELLOW jacks for Standard Definition video, ORANGE jacks for AC3 Digital audio and newer amps have HDMI jacks.
Connect the TV's audio OUTPUT jacks and a stereo pair of unused audio INPUT jacks on the amplifier with cables that have ends that match each. Turn on the stereo & TV and select the input on the amplifier that matches the stereo pair of inputs you used to connect to the TV. Adjust the volume to hear the audio over your stereo system's speakers.
Use the HDMI or AC3 sources for superior audio - including 5.1 (or better) Dobly Digital when possible. Otherwise, a standard 2 channel stereo program will be heard.
