Hi Anonymous.

I've been through several possibilities on the Browning 'Date Your Gun' website at
Browning Date Your Gun The most promising is here:
22 Semi Auto Rifle The codes here are consistent with the one you put up, and describes itself as the '22 Semi-Auto Rifle'

From this document, single digit before the T indicates manufacture between 1956 and 1967. The T means 'Long Rifle Caliber'. The remaining digits are the serial number. Since they started with a four digit number, and yours is close to 100,000, I'd guess closer to the end of that era than the beginning. Later than that and the serial would start with two digits for year of manufacture. Earlier than that, there are no serial number records. Manuals can be found here :

Serial # range for marlin model 60 with 18 shot tube and last shot bolt hold open

On Marlin-branded Model 60 rifles, the first two digits of the serial number indicate the year of manufacture. For example, if the serial number starts with 18... The 18 is significant, for subtracting it from 2000 gives the date of manufacture for the rifle, 1982. Likewise, a serial number starting with 17 would be a rifle manufactured in 1983.

This method has not been uniformly followed. It is valid only from 1971 through 1999. Prior to 1971, the first two digits indicated the year of manufacture. For example, a rifle with a serial number starting with 70... would have been made in 1970. Starting in 2000, this same old method has returned; the first two digits once more indicate the year of manufacture directly, with no subtraction required.

What was year of manufacture of Browning .22 lr semi-auto rifle serial number T80 1286?

Hi the number you list doesn't seem to be right "T" designates a 22L/R the 80 seems to be in the wrong place if the 8 was in front of the letter T it would be a 1968 rifle, the system changed in 1969 to 1973 and again in 1974 when production was moved to Miroku in Japan
