What to do when my transmission won't shift out of second?

It shifts good out of first,but in second it goes to about 45 and then it red lines..

This is a '93 Chevrolet. I think it should be equip with a transmission computer, and shifting sensor.
If that is the case, then you shuld have check first the sensor, these are inside the transmission. If the sensors are fine, check the ECU (not the main ECU, but a smaller one for the transmission). This part have to be check from somebody with computer knowledge. If the ECU is fine, then you just need to fix your transmission. Meaning that clutch must be worn out.
Just in case check the fluids and the transmission oil filter, maybe it's clog up.

    T test the selenoids (which is what I was reffering to as sensors), you need another set to troubleshoot it. What you do is have a spare selenoid for the second gear and test it in your vehicle. Do not swap them, if you do, your transmission will just misbehave badly. If it's a clutch, which is what I think you mean in the comments, then there is nothing you can do, but to repair the transmission.

    When I looked at the transmission it had a circled black thin with a wire going to it an it use at the back end of the transmission on the small part and it had a screw on it an it looked like there was a oil drip on it to ,what is this an should I change this because a friend told me to clean it up first an that it was a sensor that told the transmission to shift?

    the clutch pack works more than 1 gear (The box has planetary gear systems) so at this point I would not think too hard on it but concentrate on servos and solenoids, pressure sensors and control systems which include the transmission control module all of which will be revealed with a fault check

There are a number of causes for the failure of the automatic transmission as you have described it.

You will need to take the car to the dealership or to a transmission specialist for a proper fault check and diagnosis. From the symptoms you have described here I believe you will be looking at having to replace the auto transmission with a rebuilt unit because there will most likely be significant internal damage to transmission components . Most of these problems are due to poor/inadequate maintenance which in many cases is zero maintenance of the transmission by owners.

I have a 1993 Chevy suburban show truck and it wants to red line at 40 to 45 miles a hour .It shifts out of 1 st but in 2 ND it goes to 45 are so then it jumps in to redline ..

I had this same problem this year with mine, and it was a failed solenoid inside the bottom of the transmission. I bought the three shift solenoids from the Chevy dealer, and with an offer of 600 dollars to replace them (labor), I did it myself. Super easy job. Removed the trans oil pan and unscrewed each one.

Take it to a V W Dealer and have them service it.. Make sure you have your transmission fluid changed and get a tune up. Explain to them what it is doing.

I just bought a 2001 pontiac grand am se with 99890 miles. I would like to know what rpm is the proper shift point from first to second gear? Mine shifts at like 3000 to 3500 rpm and shifts firmly is that...

Hello,well at what rpm it shifts at of course depends on how hard your pressing the accelerator at that moment,if you floor the accelerator it will shift at higher rpm (red line) but if you take off very slowly it should shift at a much lower rpm....but to answer your question 3000-3500 is a good shifting rpm( if the gauge red lines at 6000-6500 rpm) and firm shifting is a good thing,slow,sluggish and hesitant shifting is a sign of bad things to come from a tranny!! ps keep the engine oil,and transmission oil changed for long life out of your car engine and tranny. good luck and enjoy your new car......yz-maniac.

I have a playmouth grand voyager 1999 3L,my transmission will not shift up in gear.On drive or reverse it goes well but will not shift.I think it could be an electrique problem,cause the transmission looks...

Your trans is stuck in safe mode, you are only using 2nd gear, this means it is not shifting but staying at a gear so you will not damage the trans. This is an electrical setting , however usually comes from the computer receiving bad information , rough shift, however it can be reset. Remove the positive battery cable for 30 minutes then see if it shifts, also check your fluid level, it can go into safe mode from low fluid if you made a turn and the trans slipped from low fluid . If your trans goes back into safe mode again have it checked, most important, do not drive over 45 mph or allow your rpms to raise over 3 , I have seen many motor problems that spawned from this type of trans problem, if not corrected.

First thing,

lets start with a transmission flush and filter change. then have you checked any of your vacume lines. A bad vacume line is the number one thing that causes any form of transmission mis shifting. When it gets warmed up the lines alow cracks to open up and mess up the function of the vacume line. Also you need to have the torque converter checked. You also need to have a computer scan on the vehicle. a bad sensor or coputer could cause any of these problems.
