there is something wrong with your camera shutter shutton or lcd screen or any other parts. you need send it to the maintance center,the repairer will offer you the final answer.

Now, how do we get Nikon to acknowledge that this is a problem on the 5100 as well?

You may have a ccd problem. Not sure if like Nikon and Canon if Vivitar will fix it for free.
Here is a link...contact them as to your problem, and see if they will repair it, or what.
