I assume you mean the 'bulb' setting. The selector dial needs to be set to 'M'. By using the wheel under the release button, rotate it counter-clockwise till you see 'bulb'

It sounds like it may have reformatted itself and if thats the case, they are gone. Some camera's have the option built in, then again, your computer might have done it when plugged into the card reader. I hope this can help shed some light on what may have happened, but sorry to say, if the memory card is now empty, chances are slim on recovering the pics.

are you shooting in raw format? and in hi resolution or low resolution ? If you are shooting in RAW then the buffer of the d100 is full and it needs to empty its buffer before you can shoot anymore pictures

test the memory card, if is full or corrupted. Try to probe in another camera or some machine like wallgreen for reproducing.
