Powersurge made my HD setting revert to low def.

Your TV plays High Def material through either Input 4 (uses component cables R,G,B) or through Input 5 (Uses DVI cable).
Today most equipment uses HDMI cable for High Def or it may have a component (RGB) output that you can use. The DVI hookup is best, so you need a HDMI to DVI cable or Component Cables (Red, Green, Blue). You need some source that OUTPUTS High def (ex. 1080i) either through HDMI or component cable. You need to either connect the component cable(R,G,B) from the source to the Input 4 on the TV or connect the HDMI to DVI cable from the source to the Input 5.
You need to set the AV source on the TV to AV5 (if you are using the DVI input) or AV4 (if you are using component cables).
If you want to play Highdef source like Blue Ray then you can just connect the output of the blu ray player to your Tv using either the HDMI to DVI cable or component cable (Red, Green, Blue) and set the TV input to AV5 (for HDMI/DVI) or AV4 (for component).
But if you are trying to get Free High Def from an antenna then you will need to have a component that can OUTPUT high def. The $40 converter boxes don't do this - they simply convert the Digital signal to Analog (non high def). What you need is a High Def TUNER that OUTPUTS High Def. I was looking for one for this same reason and ordered the centronics ZAT 502 HD. But it cost about $80. Then I saw that Tivo had an upgrade deal where I could upgrade my existing Series 2 Tivo to Tivo HD for $99. It has a High Def Tuner in it. So I cancelled my order with Centronics and got the Tivo. In any case if you want Over the air HD you will need a High Def Tuner that will OUTPUT 1080.

Picture is not clear, how do I fix it?

I assume that you are dissatisfied with the quality of the picture on the HDTV. Are you feeding it with an HD signal. First, it must be an HD source, either over the air HD or a cable channel in HD (not all "digital" signals are HD signals). Second, you must be sending it with the proper cable, either HDMI or at the very least RGB Component Cables (not composit video).

It is quite common to see standard definition on HDTV's actually look worse than on standard def sets. The reason is the extra pixles availble on the HDTV make you realize how low of resolution the standard def signal is. Instead of it just being fuzzy or unclear, it will actually look bad.

Recording HD channels

well you would need to hook up cable box to dvd recorder. the only draw back first off is one you cannot get hd onto a dvd. you can down scale and it will seem a little cleaner than standard def but of coarse it will never be high def. I'm not to familiar with the motorola boxes but if they offer dvr's in your area i would suggestgetting one you can record all channels then afterwards transfer them to a outside device. but as i said before high def cannot fit onto a dvd unless you plan to copy one movie to 6-7 disc. Just keep in mind a standard high def channelcan only fit 2 max on one freq due to the amount of data transfer as opposed to 10 to 12 standard def digital channels

Is this TV HD capable?

This is not an HDTV. However, that does not mean you cannot use it to view the HD channels with DirecTV, you just wont be able to view them in hi-def. Use the component inputs from the directv tuner and plug those into the proper component inputs of your JVC. Once you see the DirecTV picture on the screen, go into menu... setup (with the directTV remote) and make sure that the only resolution checked is 480i. DirecTV with 'downconvert' those cannels to standard def, and they will still look pretty good though the component connection...

... now, in answer to your next question: "What exactly do I need to view HDTV with DirecTV?"...

1. A television that will accept 720p or 1080i signals.
2. A DirecTV HD Tuner.
3. Any DirecTV service BUT you must purchase the HD pack so that they will 'unlock' the HD channels
4. The proper cables to hook in between your DirecTV HD receiver and your HD-capable TV/Monitor. You may use either HDMI or component video cables, so long as your TV will accept them. Tune your TV input accordingly. When using component video cables, you must also run a separate cable(s) for audio...

Take care,
Rob

ps. DirecTV HD tuners do not have an RF 'out'. ("coaxial or ch3/4 connection")

Thick Black Line Down Middle of TV

does this only occur with one input and/or does it occur when using HDMI/component cables.

if so, try getting a new HDMI cable. I have the same problem with PS3...and im about to order a new HDMI cable.

PS3

I never tried a Ps3 on a standard def tv before but you may need a HDMI cable to connect from the tv to the console and you need a port on the tv for the av cable that comes with the ps3 to plug into the tv from the ps3. An HD tv has everything for the ps3 to run

Unhooked ps3 from an hd tv and plugged it into an sd tv and it shows no picture.

when in standby mode(redlight) push and hold the power power button until you hear the second beep. This should reset your PS3 to it's standard 480i resolution.
