You must first remove the write protection. Here is a link to a wiki article explaining the write protect removal process and how to format using Windows or MAC.

SOURCE: Will No Longer Format SD Card

I'm assuming that you have used tried other SD cards? If so, have you tried to do a factory reset of the camera? If you have tried that and it still hasn't worked, I have one last suggestion that might help you. First, remove the battery from the camera. Once the battery has been removed from the camera get yourself a bottle of Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol and some q-tips. I tell you where I'm going with this: The contacts for the SD card in the camera could be dirty thus not allowing the camera to send the "write" message to the card, hence you get the write protected message. We going to clean the contacts to try and get it working again. One you have all the supplies, lay an old memory card down on a table with the connector pins face up. Use a memory card that you don't have any pictures on in case this process damages the data on the card. Take the q-tips and dip them in the alcohol and get a liberal amount of fluid on the tip. Next, coat each pin so that it is somewhat wet with alcohol. Don't use too much, you don't want to soak it. Next insert the SD card into the camera horizontally so that you can get the alcohol to the pins in the camera. To clean the pins remove the card and insert it several times. Repeat this whole action three to four times. Remove the SD card and let the camera stand in a position that would let the pins if they were wet drip down toward the surface. The pins should not be sopping wet, I'm just try to convey that this is how the camera should be left to dry for the next hour. After an hour or so try using the SD card that you cleaned the pins with. If it works, enjoy! If not, drop me a note. Good luck If you want me to continue to help people with there problems, please rate me!! Thanks

Well, make sure you have checked the small gray tab on the left side of the sd card. It needs to be in the unlocked position. Too bad for me, because i have the same problem and my sd card isn't locked...

SOURCE: SD Card Needs Formatted

Thank you for using fixya. SD cards have a security lock on the side that you can toggle left to right or up and down.Check your card if it is on the secure mode or not, or you can just toggle the switch then check if it will start saving captures from your camera.

SOURCE: Nikon Coolpix L11 Memory Card Error

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

How can i format write protected micro sd card 32gb....

Slide the write protect tab forward to remove the write protection. You cannot format it while it is write protected. Formatting will erase all data on the card. Install the card into a Windows or MAC and wait for the device to detect and mount the card. Use the appropriate procedure for the machine to format the card. See this procedure for additional step-by-step operations after the write protect tab has been moved.

Apacer sd card

Hi Eric Chen,
there could be a couple of reasons the sd card is write protected,

1) Write protection enabled
- If it's the standard size sd card there's a switch on the left hand side.

2) May need to be reformatted
- First backup anything on the sd card to another location (ie: a folder on the desktop)

Go into you computer/file manager (some times called my computer) select the drive letter of the sd card (may listed as removal disk)
right click -> format, check that the right size is specified then click format (double check correct drive)
Then copy the files back.

Also you maybe able to use your camera to format the sd card instead.

Hello Sean,

Please try to format the SD card using the SD Formatter 3.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC. The software formats all SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards.

Download the software from the link provided below :

Hello there!

Well somehow data on your usb flash is write protected, maybe before you locked part of your usb pen drive and losted that encryptor software on your usb.

Solution is next, find any software for formatting usb flash memory sticks, force format it and there you go. Thats about it! =)

SD Card Recognition

Perform the following procedures when your digital camera does not detect the SD card. 1. Restart the camera Turn the main power OFF, or open the battery cover or SD card/battery cover to remove the battery. Make sure the SD card is fully installed. Then, turn the main power ON, or insert a battery again and close the battery cover or SD card/battery cover until it latches. 2. Initialize the SD card Format the SD card with your camera. Formatting procedures varies depending on the camera model. See the Camera User Guide supplied with your camera for the instruction to format the SD card. When formatting the SD card, slide its tab upward to cancel write protection. It is impossible to format the SD card while it is write protected. 3. Check if your camera detects other SD cards (If you own multiple SD cards.) If your camera does not detect the SD card after performing the procedures 1 and 2, check if the camera detects other SD cards. If it does detect other SD cards, the SD card that wasn't detected may contain some problem.

Storing or formating SD card

The Secure Digital (SD) memory card has a write-protect switch on the card case. Like the write-protect switch on a floppy disk, the SD switch prevents the card from being written to. (The SD card is slightly thicker than the MultiMedia [MMC] card.) Moving the write-protect switch will allow you to write to and format the SD card. If you are looking at the front of the card, the switch is on the upper-left side.
