Replacing the dogs in most auger/agitators is kind of tricky, do to the fact that they heat seal most of the components together. Personally I have both failed and suceeded attemping this. As well it is quite hard to explain how to do without actually being there, it is fairly straight forward, Basically the dogs are inside the agitator so that when the agitation begins the back and forth action, it doesn't simply spin the agitator around and around, free spinning, or not at all, so the dogs catche and releases the splines inside the body of the agitator so your clothes are "agitated" to the point of getting clean. With that said, the most efficient way of dealing with this problem is by getting the agitator dog assembly, I looked up your model number and I believe that the part number you're seeking is 285811 agitator cam kit. Please contact if you have any questions.
HI. the internal components that make up the agitator should be inspected for damage.
The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction. Another issue that might cause this disruption is the Motor coupler.
Washers with a direct drive motor have a motor coupler instead of a belt. The motor coupler consists of three plastic disks (or tri-stars) with interlocking tabs. Those tabs can wear and break which results in slippage. The slippage causes little or no power to be transferred to the transmission. A worn motor coupling can result in weak or no movement of the agitator and spin basket. Inspecting the motor couplers requires removing the motor, which is fairly easy to do.
Remove the cabinet. Locate the motor. The pump is mounted to one side of the motor. You do not have to remove the hoses from the pump unless they prevent you from moving the pump out of your way. If you must remove the hoses, label where they connect first. To disconnect the hoses, pinch the wire clamps with pliers (or loosen the screw) and slide the clamp farther up the hose. Slide the hose off of the pump port.
There are two clips that secure the pump housing to the motor. Use a screwdriver to pry up the clips and remove the cover. Next, slide off the pump to reveal the motor. Disconnect the wiring harness from the motor, do not pull on the wires themselves. The motor typically is secured with retaining clips and bolts. Remove the bolts and use a screwdriver to pry up the clips (if present). Remove the motor.
Mounted on the shaft of the back of the motor you will find the motor coupler. Separate the three disks and inspect them for damage. If you find cracks or excessive wear, replace the coupler.
**(((If the motor couple is in good condition, replace the agitator components and clutch assembly as well.)))
yes in the spin cycle the agitator and bowl lock if not clothes ball up and machine goes out of balance check the spin coil or electric damper is activated during spin cycle if not replace if blown or open circuit also clutch arm cold be broken have a close look keep me advised
Hi. your agitator has a drive shaft and a shift link inside that uses plastic gears as well. all this is attached to the drive assembly and transmission clutch assembly. the main issue here is that the clutch and transmission has stripped the agitator kit. you will need to replace or order a new agitator kit and clutch for this unit.
HI. This issue you are having concerning the noise you are hearing from the agitator, can be resolved by replacing the clutch assembly. This assembly is responsible for initiating the agitating nature of this device. Seems to be some stripped out pieces that are vital to smooth and correct motion. I would also take a good look at the drive shaft assembl;y as well. there may be parts here that may need to be replaced as well. Finally, I would check to make sure the gear case(tranmission) is also functioningcorrectly. i suspect the clutch assembly is stripped or missing some vital parts that have broken off.
The following advice is for replacing the "Agitator Dogs" on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.
What are "Agitator Dogs"? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.
SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.
To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:
1.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap. 2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up. 3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove. 4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier. 5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand. 6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple. 7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly. 8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position). 9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly. 10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).
These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Hi, this is a bad transmission gear box that is stripped at the moment. i recommend purchasing a agitator kit and a new transmission Assembly and clutch as well. this will fix your issues
Likely you need either an agitator repair kit or need to replace the direct drive clutch assembly. The drive coupler is a fail-safe device and generally fails for a reason. In order to repair the agitator, you will need to acquire an agitator hub nut wrench.
